Micro-Activity: Looking at Genres

The musical is narrated by Lin-Manuel Miranda(my personal favorite playwright!!).  This version of the story is very playful. There is a lot of comedic relief and the libretto really aids in making this feel like a story. In this version we hear a bit more of “Naomi’s” side but overall it favors Justin’s version. Naomi being an actual character makes an audience more willing to hear what is happening in her version  because she is actually seen as a part of this story.  Watching this very playful version of the story being told definitely evokes more sympathy from an audience because music and playwright can mimic emotion. It sets a very benevolent tone.

The podcast is narrator by Robbie Brown. Justin and “Naomi” are also narrating and giving us details on their recollection of their interactions. This version of the  story comes across a bit more serious. Since it is just a podcast the audience has to visualize how this story plays out. I think that this directly affects the perception of the story. Justin comes off as very relatable, he is a fun and playful high school student so it is easy to put yourself in his shoes. We also do not get introduced to “Naomi’s” version of the story till fairly late in the podcast. This makes it easy to condemn her actions and practices since Justin’s side is being told first and at large. Also the questions being asked to him are set up to favor him. I think both the podcast ad the musical told exceptional versions of the story. They both showed different perspectives. The musicals playfulness made it easier to sympathize with “Naomi’s” reasoning but also evokes more sympathy for Justin. The podcast takes a more serious tone and and provides the information in a way where “Naomi” can be easily criticized. Overall I believe that genre and perception can change the POV of an audience.

Wow! What a great response and analysis. This, too, could be used in Unit 3– Writing in a New Genre. You could work with the genre of “theater review” and revise this…

More instruction on the final project for the semester (Unit 3- – Writing in a New Genre) will be provided next week.
