Micro-Activity #2: Responding to Bunn
- Write a post in which you do the following:
- Write a short paragraph (approx. 150 words) about yourself as a reader and writer. In your paragraph discuss the following:
- What are your reading habits and tastes? What are your reading challenges? What are your writing habits, tastes, and challenges?
- How long are you able to read without thinking about your phone, the fridge, something other than the reading you are doing? Do an experiment! Use your phone and time how long you can read without becoming distracted (use the Bunn essay or any other material to do this). Mention your results in your paragraph.
- Write a short paragraph (approx. 200-300 words) responding to the Bunn essay. In your response you should do the following:
- Identify one specific moment that you found useful and that you want to try out as a reader. Copy the lines you have identified and explain why you found this useful or important.
- How does Bunn begin his article on page 71? Why do you think he chooses to start this way? What details does he use, and why do you think he includes them?
- Make a list of the questions that Bunn suggests we think about as we “read like a writer.”
- Write a short paragraph (approx. 150-200 words) responding to Morrison. In your response you should address the following questions:
- What do you think Morrison means by reading as a “skill” vs. reading as an “art”?
- How does Morrison’s description of reading as “an art” change the meaning of the activity of reading?
- In your response, quote Morrison at least once to help you illustrate your ideas.
