Journal #8 Event

I have attended several workshops and meet and greet throughout my time in the navy yard and I had an amazing opportunity to meet more than 15 company’s CEO and build a genuinely friendly relationship with them. One of the events was about leadership building.I didn’t have to attend there but since I am very interested in building skills and quality as a leader I attended that event. There were several other CEOs of different startup companies that were attending there. We took a survey where we answered questions about how we react to situations and cases as a leader and based on that survey we got a result that showed what type of leader we are, what are our weakness and how we can improve our skills in the places we lack. it was an amazing experience for me to go through.

My internship hours has come to end and I have received a very well evaluation from my supervisors. Even though it came to an end it was a paid internship. I was getting paid through another city tech program but now Brooklyn navy yard has hired me as their own interns. I genuinely love working there. The environment is amazing and very comfortable. Everything is very fast paced moving and it’s good for me because I like working fast in being on top of my toes. I work on designing posters for the most part but there are a lot of different other tasks for me to do.

I’ve created a few connections here at work that I believe will help me to grow even after I leave this place. One of my coworker who is also an intern but is a master student has helped me understand and learn the process of how to create an outline or a presentation to raise funding for a start-up nonprofit. This is really helpful because, at some point in the far future, I want to start a nonprofit organization of my own. This was a skill I did not learn in school. It is not something that I was even aware of in the past until now. I’ve also worked on how to put together presentations to show your thought process in paper so other people (that you’re presenting to) will have a better idea of what’s going on in the presenter’s head.

Working at Brooklyn navy yard sometime can be challenging. I was recently assigned to design a slideshow/video to celebrate the 265th birthday of the navy yard. It was a little confusing and complicated task for me because there was not enough direction or information for me to work with. I was told to ‘be creative’ when this assignment landed on my lap and I never got enough creative feedback from my peers or superiors on this project and whenever I needed to speak to someone to make the project better there were not many colleagues that had time to spend on this project. So I’ve completed that project without much guidance and my supervisor ended up throwing the whole thing away and re-do the project on her own without even giving me any feedback on what I’ve done or told me why it was being rejected. That made me feel frustrated and upset but that’s part of the process and I’m learning how to deal with that.

I’ve been working with different parts of the company. I was assigned to work originally with the external affairs department as a graphic design intern which allowed me to learn a lot of brand designing and how to stay consistent with my design so everything looks like it came from the same company. No matter what I design there’s a set of color palette that I have to follow that represent the brand. I’ve had experience working with the employment center when a new company name Wegman came into the navy yard. This allowed me to get involved with the process of getting to know people and talk to the potential candidates that will be working at the Wegman.

This event wash hosted by Eve who is the founder of many nonprofits organizations. One of the most significant movement she is part of is known as v day which is a global movement to end violence against women and girls worldwide. https://vday.org/

In this event, she invited founders of other global activist organizations and performing artists to talk about the works that they are doing around the world to serve justice and make the world a better place. In this event, I’ve met a lot of important women from the nonprofit and activist field. I’ve met the co-founder of the organization #SayHerName who’s daughter was brutally killed by the police. I’ve also met the co founder of the women who is fighting against the caste system in India. Everyone was very friendly and humbling and eager to work with me regardless of my background knowledge and experience in activism which is very little to none.

My workplace is a very fast moving environment. Everyone is running with the wind and working on things they are supposed to take care of to keep the big wheel moving. Everyone is a small part of a big engine but every single part of the machine is very significant and everyone is aware of that. I think we all are here because we care about making the world a better place to some extent so we chose to work at a nonprofit organization.  We are told to wear formal attire, which means anything except jeans and sweatpants but everyone at the work seems to dress up and in fact, they like dressing up. Everyone has their own workspace but it’s bigger and open to being called a cubicle. They are designed in a way so the coworkers can communicate with each other. We recently moved to a new building which provides a lot of open spaces and beautiful view from our working space. I normally go to work around 12:30 pm and work till 2:00 pm and then take a 30 min lunch break and then continue with my work till 6:30 pm.

I started this internship in October 2018 and my supervisors were very friendly and helpful. They explained everything I needed to do when I was there and always was open for me to ask questions if I was ever confused about anything. My supervisor, Michael Pellegrino, recently left so now I am working with my other coworkers. My current supervisors are Katie Beck Sutler, T. Anifalaje, and Chantell Campbell.  In my second month of being there, I was assigned to recreate a 96-page presentation in powerpoint. I didn’t even know how to use powerpoint and I taught myself and recently finished working on that document which I am very proud of. I had a group interview with other interns who were selected to work at Brooklyn navy yard. I got this internship through a program called service corps. After the interview, I asked Katie, who use to run the internship program, if I can work in a department that would allow me to work with the design aspect of the department. She reviewed my portfolio and places me in external affairs. I had a several group interviews with the service corps to be selected and but after I was selected, I only had to interview with the navy yard once.

Brooklyn Navy Yard

I’m currently interning at Brooklyn Navy Yard. brooklyn navy yard is one is the biggest nonprofit organization in new york city. It’s a public nonprofit company that runs with the money from New York City budget funding however they act freely of the NYC government. Brooklyn Navy yard acts free of their own. They have created about 16,000 jobs within the navy yard in the last 12 years and aim to create more jobs for the people in new york city to help to end the wage gap. The navy yard was a United States military navy base built in 1801. After World War II,  the military abandoned the shipyard at 1966 and New York City government decided to purchases the yard from the U.S. military. I’m currently interning at Brooklyn Navy Yard’s external affairs department.  In the external affairs department, I mostly work with the junior graphic designer and design flyers, posters to promote future events and other gatherings that take place in the navy yard. Besides that, I also help out with the office works such as answering phone calls, making phone calls, running errands for the office or the employment center etc.

Field Trip Assignment

Cooper Hewitt Museum is one of the most interesting museum I’ve visited. The location of the museum is very interesting. The museum is located in the Upper East Side in Manhattan which is a residential area therefore I can only assume how hard it would be for the museum to survive. The museum itself is an art itself. The architecture of the building, the location, and the garden everything comes together to create an amusing environment for the visitors. The exhibits includes artworks from ancient artifacts to digital holographic wallprints. It includes sculpture, clothes, wooden works, typographic works, illustrations and more. The museum is always full of new artworks that was never seen there before. This makes the place more interesting and causes my visitors to keep coming back.

POSTER, GOOD NEWS FROM IRAN, EMERGING IRANIAN ARTISTS, 2013

The poster was designed by Homa Delvaray in 2013. The image is digitally created. The poster was designed by Homa Delvaray in 2013. The image is digitally created. I chose this image because the colors that was used it the image are very bright and outstanding. The use of various colors creates a balance of cool and warm colors throughout the image. The typography that’s used in the image matches the playful theme of the poster. The letters are giants and colorful which makes more very playful. The poster has a child-like playful feeling and that speak to me. It makes me feel calm inside. I love surrealistic arts and digital imagery and this picture has both.

SCALE MODELS, ARCHITECTURE IS EVERYWHERE, 2015

The scale models were one of my favorite piece of art from Cooper Hewitt. The scale was created by Sou Fujimoto Architects. The series was made for 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial. The series was made using different types of objects such as matchbox, staples, plastics bottles, steel, paper, fabrics etc. Every piece of the series contains some little humans which is interacting with the objects. First time I passed by the series I did not see the little people. But when I passed by them one more time, I saw the little people and I was surprised. The first thing that came to mind was the book Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift. It’s a story about a man who travels to a land where people are very small. The small people were the one that caught everyone’s attention.

TEXTILE, PARACHUTES, 1926–28

Parachutes was designed by Pierre Mourgue and the Stehli Silk Corporation. The textile was made by silk and the image was screen printed. This print was made by using cool colors. The color scheme uses blue, cyan, white and a very light cyan. I like this piece because the image has a peaceful feeling to it. I love the color scheme and the repetition of the parachute in the image. I choose this work because I have a great interest in fabric and I hope to start my own clothing line in future. This piece of silk is beautiful and it’s something
