Who Knows Brooklyn

The article “Who Knows Brooklyn” by Ben McGrath is about a feud between two authors claiming that they know Brooklyn better then anyone else.  Brian Merlis and John Manbeck criticize each others work without even having an open mind as to why the other said something different about a certain picture or even an event.  The battle between who knows Brooklyn began when Merlis was inclined to delivery a critique about a book he had received as a present from a friend about photographs in Brooklyn.  He said that the book was wrong and had many mistakes as to what Brooklyn really is or was back then in the photographs.  Manbeck answered back to his criticism and questioned Merlis’s credibility, whether he was fit to even know what Brooklyn’s history was back then.  The feud goes on and on as the two authors just fire back at each other calling each other names and having lack of knowledge.  This feud is very irrelevant to what Brooklyn really is, everyone is entitled to their opinions, especially about Brooklyn because it keeps changing all the time.  A place may have so much significance to one person or just mean nothing to another.  It just takes the right pair of eyes and an open mind to see what is present in front of you.  Merlis and Manbeck have a different point of view in everything, this would be a good example of different perspectives.  They are just too stubborn to realize what else there is to see in a photograph other then just each others thoughts.

Who knows Brooklyn

New York magazine published an article titled ‘Who Knows Brooklyn’. It was given this that title because it is about two authors who claim to know Brooklyn more than the other. Brian Merlis, author of 15 books about Brooklyn, received John Manbeck’s, another author of Brooklyn, book as a present. He sent a review of Manbeck’s book to the Brooklyn Paper and Brooklyn Daily. He trashed Manbeck’s book and said it was better off in a fire then in a bookshelf. Merlis claimed that Mancbeck’s information in his book was inaccurate and Manback retorts that Merlis’ information from his book was stolen from the Kings-borough Historical Society. Apparently neither of them are trained historians however. Basically this article illustrates the importance of credibility of information, citing information, and realizing the responsibility, as a writer, to put out correct and credible information.

WHO KNOWS BROOKLYN

Ben McGrath’s Who Knows Brooklyn is a short article about two feuding authors Brian Merlis and John Manbeck. Both authors Merlis and Manbeck believe they have superior expertise when it comes to knowledge about Brooklyn. The origination of their feud began as Merlis felt inclined to send in a very critical and negative review about Manbecks book “Historic Photos of Brooklyn”. Merlis leads one to believe that Manbecks book is flawed as he says the book is “enumerating a host of mistakes”. Merlis is a recognized author in Brooklyn as he has written 18 book and 15 of those books are about Brooklyn. In retaliation to the criticism from Merlis, Manbeck fires back questioning the credibility of Merlis as an author. In addition to this he insinuates that Merlis is rather jealous of him as he says “I think he might have felt upstaged, because I was amassing this huge photo collection and he wasn’t doing that much”. The author of the article goes on to mention how neither of these authors are trained historians but rather self-proclaimed experts on Brooklyn. Along with this both are teachers Manbeck is a professor for journalism at Kingsborough community college and also Merlis teaches social studies in Queens, NY. From this reading I learned that some feuds are unbelievably pointless. This article serves as a great example of how ignorant people can be. I think that people should take into account criticism but there isn’t any reason to feel offended about a comment unless it is totally condemning.

who knows brooklyn

this story that we read in class was about a two authors that were basically always criticizing each others work. they were both pretty old. one was 54 years old. there were some vocabulary words that were in the story that i did not understand. this story is about two authors. they write about brooklyn and the area around it. they also talk about the press and how many people just use the vanity press just to see their book published. they don’t care about the quality of the work. they just wanna see it published and out there in the public. they both criticized each other. one of them even called the other an amateur. he said that the man never had an official position. he wrote about east flatbush because he was interested in it. he didnt want to do it for the money he just did it for the heck of it. they also took many pictures because he said he requires three thousand square feet of space in order to keep the photographs. that is a lot of photographs. merlis lives on the south shore of long island but his focus is on brooklyn which is quite interesting. why does he not have that much interest in long island. maybe brooklyn has a better history. merlis has a lot of confidence in him self because he always talks about how people ask him for help. he believes he is superior in his work.

Who Knows Brooklyn? – Summary

In this short passage from “The New Yorker” we get this interesting “tug of war” between two authors who are battling for whos more credible when it comes to Brooklyn and its history. The passage starts out with the introduction of a men named Brian Merlis, whom is one of the authors involved in the battle. We quickly learn that Merlis recieved a book for his birthday entitled “Historic Photos of Brooklyn” and that he was “moved” enough to send unsolicited reviews to the  Brooklyn Paper and the Brooklyn Daily. As you can guess, the reviews were not positive, and Merlis criticizes the book along with the publisher using his expertise to back him up. Merlis also noted that he found many mistakes, for example: “The author calls Williamsburg a fashionable resort until the 1903 opening…When in actually its resort days ended by the close of the Civil War.”; this quote shows that Merlis feels as if the author is uncredible.

The second paragraph serves more as a counter-argument for “the author in question” John Manbeck. He is introduced along with the info of him being Brooklyn’s official historian from 1993 to 2001. Manbeck’s credibility is then defended a few time throught this paragraph, one instance being that he took his characterizations of Williamsburg from his grandfathers writings, which indeed serves as a defence from Merlins previous accusation. Also we learn that Manbeck ommited Merlis’s work from his compiled list of fifty-six recommended resources during his tenure at Borough Hall. The last thing mentioned was that Merlis came to one of Manbeck’s meetings and told him why he did not publish any of his books onto Manbecks’s list. Manbeck simply told him that he doesn’t have any good books, and then the paragraph ends with a statement that Manbeck said to Merlis which defended his publisher “Turner” from being a vanity press.

“WHO KNOWS BROOKLYN ?”

The short story we had to read “Who Knows Brooklyn?” is about two authors that both claim to know all about Brooklyn and are experts at it, but they are both very biased and different. John Manbeck is the first author who lived in Brooklyn and was a local histarian for about eight years. He also teaches journalism at Kingsborough, he was the author of several books but he always had problem with another man who is named, Brian Merlis. He is a social studies teacher in Queens, but they had a feud over who knows more about Brooklyn and would consatntly argue over who has more better quality in their writtings. One major difference is in Merlis because he likes to spice things up as quoted from the passage as saying “Local history is usually little-old-lady stuff,” Merlis said. “I try to add a  little salsa.”

Finally what I learned from this is that I can see a picture and then I can show it to a friend or a stranger and we will both have different views and might consider the other persons opinion as irrelevant or pointless, but this goes to show you that everyone sees and analyzes things differently, and that does not make them wrong you just have to be the bigger person and see if you can understand what they see.

  • add a comment in the margin
  • circle
  • write over the text to make it bold
  • question mark for something that doesn’t yet make sense–then return to it

  • make an outline on a separate sheet of paper (reading notebook)
  • underline quotations and numbers
  • use post-it notes when you can’t write in the book
  • write abbreviated version of what’s in the text
  • define words you don’t know
  • ask questions to yourself to help you think about what you might want to write about in your paper

Library session

On Wednesday, our class went to the ctiy tech library and on the second floor they had a room with computers and the desktop was touch screen. We were put in to a groups of threes and we the envelop was given to us. Inside the envelop had strips of sentences and we were to put them in order to see what event comes first. We also learned how to researched and to siting properly. We researched about the Brooklyn waterfront and as a class we put took some of the information that we searched up and put it together. We also learned that what is a creditable site for researching and whats not a creditable site. For example, Wikipedia is not a creditable site for researching before the information is base on other people’s knowledge and assumptions. The site can be edited by any people.  The librarian taught us how to broaden and narrow our search results so it will be easier for us to find the information that we need.

Library Session

On Wednesday, we went to the library and learned about different types of maps. We were given actual maps from decades ago and were able to touch them and look about them. We also received a handout and were put into groups of 5  and were told to try and identify the maps by the characteristics listed on the sheet.

My group had a map of Downtown Brooklyn from the 1990’s, it was really interesting to look at because some of the streets had different names from what they were called now. Even our college had a different name, after completing the sheet we were given a task from Professor Davis which was to make a 3-5 minute impromptu speech explaining about the different maps in only 7 minutes, Each group went and we got to see what 3 maps they were given and everyone seemed to know what they were doing.

Library Session

On Wednesday we has a joint session on the second floor of the City Tech library.  i have been there many times but not to the upstairs area.  We didnt look around much, we went straight into one room, where they had touch screen desktops, which was honestly awesome! Anyways, we did a catalogue search and articles search on the Brooklyn waterfront.  We surfed the web on the most basic search engine at first which was google.com.  Afterwards we went on wikipedia and learnt that it may not be so credible or reliable but it may always be current since mostly anyone can update it to anything they would like.  A way to see if the information is correct on that website would be to check the references at the bottom of that site as well for a second source.  The librarian taught us many neat tricks on how to broaden or narrow our search results.  we use less words for a general search and more words for a more specific search.

After that, we were all basically connected to a note pad so we would type down our searches that we found on the waterfront and created a speech together, well the outline of a research/informative speech in about 15 minutes with the information the whole class got together from all the search engines and materials taught during the three hours we were there.  It was a very productive joint class session and we learned a lot of narrowing down and looking up things online in a much quicker, and efficient way.

Two New Yorks

I chose the Supreme Court of New York State and the Christopher Columbus statue in Cadman Plaza because they are both just a few years apart but the court house was thought of years before the sculptor of the Columbus monument was even born.  The supreme court house represents law and order, and as we know Columbus represents freedom and discovery.  Laws are made and bills are passed, as well as decisions for a case, whatever the matter is, this is a very important place to be in or around.  You can feel the importance when you’re around the park. The Columbus statue has a new New york vibe and feel because it looks out of place in a way. It should be where it was originally meant to be which was in Central Park but instead it was put in Downtown Brooklyn in 1971. The Supreme Court has so much history attached to it that it makes it way other then when it was officially opened til now.

To get to the Supreme Court you leave City Tech by the Namm entrance/exist, head down to Johnson Street/ Tech Pl. all the way down to Cadman Plaza West.  Then after that you cross the park, in front of you you will see the Borough Hall building, turn to your left once you are between Montague Street and Greenpont.

library session

what we learned in the library on wednesday was VERY helpful. we learned how to do research. yes this might sound like its quite simple. You might think that; maybe i just have to google it and ill get my answers. no sir, the librarian was kind enough to share with us various ways we can search articles, books, magazines, newspapers, websites and many more resources that can help us with what ever we need. we also learned how to find out if the books that we found helpful are available in the city tech library. i found this information very helpful because there are hundreds and thousands of books in the library. how in the world are you suppose to find the right one with the right text and the right information that will help you on your project or you paper. to find a book that will help you, you just simple put the topic in the search bar on the website and it points you in the direction to go. I also learned the order of how information is released. we had to do an exercise where we put everything in the correct order. this exercise was very interesting and fun. all in all i had a great time experiencing new things in the library and learning new ways to become a better researcher. i hope this information helps me on in the future when i have to write very long and meaningful research papers.
