notetaking

the kinds of things we do when we take notes:

  • underline
  • highlight
  • star
  • draw an arrow
  • add a comment in the margin
  • circle
  • write over the text to make it bold
  • question mark for something that doesn’t yet make sense–then return to it
  • write important facts–dates, names that are capitalized
  • make an outline on a separate sheet of paper (reading notebook)
  • underline quotations and numbers
  • use post-it notes when you can’t write in the book
  • write abbreviated version of what’s in the text
  • define words you don’t know
  • ask questions to yourself to help you think about what you might want to write about in your paper
  • ask questions of the author
  • ask questions that you want to bring up in class
  • paraphrase important sentences in the margin
  • margin notes for outside information
  • summarize paragraphs or parts of paragraphs in the margin
