Query

Query- (noun)

Definition : a question or a request for information about something

Found in Line 8 in “There Was Once” by Margaret Atwood – ” That’s better. But I have to seriously query this word poor.”

I know understand that this line is trying to say that the second speakers has to really question what the storyteller considers to be “poor”. Having to sleep in the subway stations in cardboards is what truly should be considered “poor”

We Need Something Different !

After reading “There Was Once”, by Margaret Atwood I see a disagreement between two speakers, the person actually telling the story(storyteller) and the second speaker.  I feel as if the storyteller wanted to retell the story as similar as we will expect a Cinderella story to be told whereas the second speaker wanted to add some reality and truth to it. A reality that could be more acceptable in today’s society. It starts of by saying, “There was once a poor girl, as beautiful as she was good, who lived with her wicked stepmother in a house in the forest.”  At this point it totally reminded me of the original fairytale, but as soon as it was interrupted by the second speaker wanting to change the setting to a urban area and questioning how poor she really was made me think about it as well. The second speaker made a perfect example in saying that if she was considered poor, yet living in a house, what will we consider people that come to the subway stations after dark to be? I think the second speaker wants the readers to actually think deeply in what they are reading and make sense out of it.  The second speaker wanted to change the total story including economic statues, what we consider to be beautiful and appearance. The second speaker wanted to create a story out of the ordinary and not something everyone expect it to be, something different. We are so accustomed on seeing and reading things one certain type of way that it doesn’t give us any chance to trying new things, think about things in a different perspective and that’s exactly what I think the second reader was trying to accomplish. It’s not about being have a specific color, gender or looking a certain type of way but being open and coming out of the comfort zone.

Introducing Myself <3

My name is Naiomi Ramos and I am 19 years old. I come from a Dominican family which I truly love. I love my culture and my roots although I was born in New York. I believe I am a really family orientated person because we share lots of time together. I was blessed to be an aunt at a young age by my brother and I love my niece as my own (I love kids). I am Liberal Arts major at this point and will be getting my associates degree by the end of this semester. I will be coming back to school and trying to get into the radiology program which is my dream in spring 2015 because sadly they only accept people in spring semester. I was missing one prerequisite which didn’t allow me to apply this semester, but I am taking it knowJ. I hope for the best and that everything come out as plan. I am sure that I will like to stay in the medical field just in case radiology doesn’t work out. I am a very friendly person love to meet new people yet I could be shy at the same time. I love to dance (Spanish music is my preference haha). One thing I truly love to do and always do is laugh. I feel like laughing is the joy to life. I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason so, therefore i try to always stay positive know matter what situation I am in. I am truly looking forward to this class. I hope to learn more about women writing and their different styles and ideas.  I hope my classmates and I have a great semester (of course you to professorJ). I was glad to meet you in our last meeting and hope on having a great relationship!

Can Death Equal to Happiness?

I found “The Story of an Hour”, by Kate Chopin very interesting. Throughout the story elements that kept coming across has to be irony and symbolization. It starts of by stating that Mrs. Mallard has a heart problem which right away made me think that something tragic was bound to happen as I continued to read. We then find out about her husband’s death due to a terrible railroad accident. As a normal wife will react towards this type of horrible news Mrs. Mallard was devastated, not wanting to accept the truth.

Mrs. Mallard then takes time to be alone and locks herself into her room where the irony of this story begins to take place. As Ms. Mallard is alone in her room staring through a window, which in the story it will symbolizes the new life she sees for herself. She starts to feel a sense of joy and freedom. The irony of the story is that due to her husband death she knows feels free. Mrs. Mallard is now in control of her “own” life. In the story she repeats to herself, “FREE, FREE, FREE.”  After reading how she felt only makes me assume that while she was living with her husband she was unhappy. I also believe that she really didn’t know how unhappy she was until this happen, until she actually felt the sense of being on her own where she will live for herself.

I also feel as Mrs. Mallard felt a sense of guilt for feeling this way after her husband death. The authors states, “There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it , fearfully”. This convey that she was afraid of what she was feeling because maybe she understood that it wasn’t normal to have joy or relief in such a terrible situation.

Mrs. Mallard now hopes for a longer life whereas before she was afraid of it being long. The story states “she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that window.” The window was a symbol of life where she saw all kinds of days she will be free, where she smelled fresh air and heard sounds that gave her a new reason to live.  Later in the story we find out that Mr. Mallard was actually alive and was not even near the accident that occur which is also something to think about because in the beginning of the story Richard states that he waited for the second telegram to assure it was him. At the moment of his arrival Mrs. Mallard dies of her heart disease.

Irony also takes place when the author states “When the doctors came they she had died of heart disease—- of joy that kill.” Now we can ask ourselves two questions was it the joy that of seeing her husband again or that fact that she just lost the joy she recently regained after feeling free again? In my opinion I believe that she died due to the fact that she was about to relive the life she had before.
