Discussion: Who do you read?

To immerse yourself in a field you want to know more about, you probably read, watch, listen to, look at, talk about lots of things. You likely already do this when it comes to your favorite musician, manga, team, etc. What about for your major/career path, either more broadly or the specific focus you’re thinking about?

Do some research to find who to follow on social media to learn more about your field and feel like you’re in the know, what channels to watch on YouTube, what blogs to read, what magazines to read, who writes about what you’re interested in for the New York Times or other newspaper, who podcasts about your field, what museums feature installations related to your field, and so on.

Share your results in a comment below. Use your classmates’ ideas to help expand your field-specific universe. We’ll use these ideas as our readings to prepare for Tuesday’s class.

A very useful YouTuber that I found and follow is Brendan Hasty who is a structural engineer that talks about and physically demonstrates the laws of structures and key principles in civil engineering. It is very easy to learn valuable information from him because he uses real world structures in his explanations to teach his viewers how the structures are possible. NewCivilEngineer.com is also a great blog to follow to keep up to date with developments in the civil engineering field and to be aware of interesting projects being conducted worldwide.

Some discoveries I made while looking at who to know in the fields of the built environment:

Podcast: 99% Invisible. This is a podcast about what goes into all the things we don’t think about in architecture and design. It’s been around for more than 10 years, so there are more than 400 episodes.

Listicle: Top 11 Instagram Accounts to follow in the Built Environment: this listicle gives details about 11 instagram accounts ranging from widely known to lesser known, all of which can then be starting points for other media outlets for these Instagrammers or their topics.

Online Newspaper: The Gothamist: an online newspaper about the very local things happening in NYC. It’s currently run under the umbrella of WNYC, New York’s public radio.

What I’ll look for is really a college that goes deeply into the architectural aspects since I’m only at city tech. I’ve took advise and peoples recommendations, just never a deeper dive into them like cooper union college. I’ve heard about this from a professor from NYU internship that I went to during my summer. From what I learn and heard is place on its own with the architecture style applied everywhere in the school. I’m not saying that city tech on its own is bad but I would choose to go else where since it usually feels empty all the time.
