“Shitty First Drafts”

My views on the writing process have changed since reading “shitty first drafts”. The reason my views have changed is because in high school, the teachers would always make it seem like  our first drafts have to be important. They don’t treat it as a learning process or as something that I can gain ideas from , instead they  call it lazy and look for the mistakes and redundant uninteresting  things. Now I realize that first drafts are a way for writers to figure out what direction they want to go in when it comes to progressing their story. Lamott’s writing process contrast to mine because she actually doesn’t take her first draft seriously , she sees it as a way to write whatever she wants because she knows no one is gonna be able to view it. In my first draft I try to write the best I can and then hand it to someone to see what I can improve on. I also don’t look back at my first draft and try to draw inspiration from it which is something that Lamott does.  The steps in her process that I don’t use is writing the draft as something that isn’t serious. I also don’t look back at my drafts and try to find something  interesting and add it into my new draft. The step I would consider adding into my new writing process is getting all my ideas out in the first draft and finding the main thing that looks interesting to me.

“How to read like a writer”- Rashawn Lemon

When the author said we are already authors I think he meant that we already write and tell stories everyday to people. For example we might text our friends and families and tell them about our day, although we might not be aware that telling someone about our day is actually telling and writing a story we are still doing what authors do.We also often argue with friends and family about things and try to convince them as to why they may be wrong on some things, trying to convince someone is a technique that certain authors would use when they are trying to debunk something or prove that something is right. We may also be considered authors because we literally just read and analyzed his article and that is a big part for how authors find ideas and inspire themselves. This existing expertise will help us in our college reading and writing career because we already are writers and now that we are aware that everyday we’re telling a story , we can get a better understanding of what makes a good story and what makes an audience more interested. Why did my friend find the story funny? If he wasn’t my friend , would it still be funny? We will also start questioning the author’s choice and reasoning in  the articles, text, passages, poems, stories that you send us. Things I noticed in Bunn’s article that I would like to start doing are trying to find words that would be considered too formal because it did make the introduction more interesting for me compared to his shorter version. I also would want to use the technique of asking the 2 questions , who were the intended audience? And how does me knowing who the author is and what he does influence my views on what I’m about to read ? I’ll also start looking at the techniques that the author is using and see if it was effective or not.

One word that describes how I feel about this course is interesting because this is the first class where the teacher just gives us the work and we meet and discuss it. I think I may like this format better honestly. My worries and concerns in this class is that I’m going to start falling behind eventually because I might get lazy and begin procrastinating, As I type this I probably have already taken 5 breaks.
