My unit 2 essay was about the meaning of being gifted and being talented; the differences and similarities between them. It also talks about the similarities and differences of mentality and mindset and how they connect to gifted and talented. Due to the philosophical nature of this essay, there were many genres I felt were inappropriate to use. The essay was more opinionated so informative speeches, articles, etc. wouldn’t fit. There were persuasive elements to it, however the concept behind the essay was more about giving the audience something to think about where as a persuasive piece would try and convince the audience to do or believe something. This essay also didn’t have a specific target audience so any genre that focused on a certain group also didn’t seem like a good fit. One genre I think would fit is a motivational speech. In the essay I talk about how people can go beyond what their supposed limits are and can achieve many things with the right amount of effort. Altering the tone and message of the essay, I think it could turn into a successful motivational speech while still keeping essential elements of it. Another genre that would fit would be a video essay; more specifically, for youtube. Youtube is a platform where people can post all kinds of videos and effectively find an audience for them. In a video essay, I can keep a lot of the elements I have in the essay while still making it enjoyable. It will also bring in a different audience; an audience that watches videos rather than read articles. Another genre would be a written abstract posted on social media. A lot of social media gives people the ability to express themselves whether it’s formal or informal and, like youtube (which is like social media), it helps find an audience interested in what they say. A written abstract is like writing an essay but because of the informal nature, it can feel more personal to the reader, thus making it more fun and impactful to read versus an academic essay.
