Taking everything into account, while researching the topic of gentrification in bed stuy Stuyvesant, I have learned that for a long time, gentrification has been a thing and I thought it was only happening from the years 2000s and up but ever since then, gentrification has gotten a lot worse now as one of the areas I talked about it was said to be only Black residents concentrated area but then the government finds them and always increase the rent which meant forcing them to leave their respective area which was surprising to me because I didn’t know that if they couldn’t afford to pay their rent or their mortgages meant that they kicked them out of their areas and for some that meant that they and their families are homeless with no place to go or money to survive but for some others, they were forced to find shelters with their families so they could live in since they couldn’t afford to live in their respective area. the research in the third article that I researched talks about ways the government can help reduce/control gentrification in areas where they are most vulnerable to gentrification and another thing that surprised me was that the government has already agreed to help reduce/control gentrification.

2. Summary: In this article, Hairston Kashief emphasizes that Bedford Stuyvesant has an increase in rent rate of up to 36.1% over the years and how the government has begun to clean up their streets only because then they would put rents high for urban professionals with higher income to move in and due to this a lot of families have been kicked out of their place where they live because they cant afford to pay the rent because its too high and have had to move to shelter to live.

3. Reflection: I believe this article is relevant because it shows how gentrification has had a big impact on the families and people living there before the rich people and after the rich people came in.

4. Rhetorical analysis: The author Hairston Kashief has a background of being a public speaker has a bachelor’s degree and has written many journals.

5. Genre analysis: Hairston Kashief is a well-rounded author who hasn’t written many journals but he gives well-rounded information about what he is talking about>

6. key quotes:” There is no secret that the emergence of businesses is resulting in higher rent prices, but what happens with those residents that are earning less than 25,000 annually? In 2005–2009, Bed-Stuy was the leader in community districts with families entering shelters at 2,500. According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010, 30.7% of residents in Bed-Stuy were in poverty meaning that they could barely afford to pay their rent. There is a correlation between the rise in rent, income, and homelessness in the popular neighborhood, one can assume that gentrification leads to the cause of displaced residents in that neighborhood. The population in shelters has greatly increased as a result, with Stuyvesant Heights/Bed-Stuy (Name change is one of the effects of gentrification) claiming the third most entries into family shelters at 2,025 from 2002–2012.”

I chose this part of the article because it talks about how due to gentrification a lot of a lot of families in the neighborhood have been kicked out of their place due to the high rent and the families not being able to afford to pay the rent thus forcing the families to go and look for some shelter to keep them from being homeless in the streets

2. Summary: In this article, Carpenito Thomas stresses gentrification on how the upper-class men and the government are taking areas with low rent and moving in to build their stuff and make them expensive like the rent and the mortgages. Despite all of this negative stuff the author Carpenito Thomas also talks about how some parts of the government are helping out the people that have been forced to leave due to high rent. He also talks about different ways to fix gentrification like rent stabilization, rezoning, lower income resistance to zoning, mandatory inclusive housing property tax allocation, and lower property taxes.

3. Reflection: I believe this article is relevant because it talks about how some part of the government doesn’t help out the people in need instead they just force them to leave their areas and increase the price in that area and it also what I’m writing about because it’s showing us different ways to not stop but to reduce/ control gentrification and so that way people have somewhere to go instead of being in shelters or homeless in the streets.

4. Rhetorical analysis: Thomas Carpenito is a guy who helps people by making articles on ways to fix the issues that people are experiencing

5. Genre analysis: Thomas Carpenito is a guy who wants a better future so he writes and always talks about how to fix/ control something that is affecting a lot of the communities and he also likes to help out in the community.

6. key quotes: “While a new wave of progressivism has engulfed New York City and even New York State, this has yet to reach the Governor’s Office. For gentrification in New York City to be solved progressive measures as well as historically conservative measures must be taken at the state levels. The progressive position of universal rent stabilization, the bipartisan position of property tax reform, and the conservative case against corrupt unions must be implemented in the state government. To make any real progress the Governor’s office as well as the New York State Legislature must uniformly invest and support these policies to stop the displacement of New York’s most vulnerable.”

I chose this part of the article because they are trying to agree to help reduce gentrification in the areas where there are low-income people.

Gentrification happens when a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in meaning improving housing, and attracting new businesses, typically displaying current inhabitants in the process and forcing them to move somewhere else. My basic research question for my topic is “How can we reduce gentrification?” Gentrification is a big problem in today’s society because it shows urban areas being renovated by wealthy people and this is bad for people living in the urban areas because it will shift the neighborhood characteristics and racial-ethnic composition, and the rent there will begin to increase, the mortgages, and the property taxes and this forces the people living in the area to start moving out and find somewhere else to live, somewhere where they can afford the cost of living in a place and not somewhere expensive. According to Carpenito, Thomas. “How to Fix Gentrification.” Medium, Medium, 11 Sept. 2020, medium.com/@thomascarpenito3/how-to-fix-gentrificationcb74ccd35447#:~:text=The%20best%20way%20to%20do,housing%20and%20universal%20rent%2Dstabilization.&text=%E2%80%9CMandatory%20Inclusive%20Housing%E2%80%9D%20is%20a,affordable%20housing%20across%20the%20city.”Upzoning (rezoning an area to increase density/height), however, is a massive political feat. Both low-income and high-income neighborhoods lobby and fiercely reject upzoning due to the numerous negative effects associated with it. This tremendous resistance and almost unanimous resistance to increasing housing in the city council has meant that there has hardly been any rezoning during the entire De Blasio administration (2014-Current). In the city council, members often vote in line with the council member whose district is being rezoned. To garner support for upzoning a variety of policies must first be implemented before rezoning to allow the rezoning to be beneficial and politically viable to all residents.” This Communicates that a lot of people are putting up resistance to Gentrification because all of the people know the side and negative effects of having their area/community gentrified and the government is rezoning people so they can build what they want in people’s community.

In “Annoying ways people use sources” by Kyle D. Stedman talks about how he has encountered writers who have misused their sources annoying him and he then compares those writers to a car driving slow in a fast lane and if you are in a fast lane it means you gotta fast and he makes this comparison to show how writers don’t cite their source or misquote something in their writing and that annoys him. He then shows us some improper citing and helps us see why it annoys him. In the end, the author tells us how following the rules of writing is helpful so you don’t make a mistake while writing.

I think this source is reliable because the author provides his name and his contact information and he also states his purpose and examples to prove his point.

After reading Esmeralda Santiago’s “When I Was Puerto Rican” and Howard Gamer’s “Five Minds of the Future”. I enjoyed it the most reading Esmeraldas Santiago one because it was a short story and kind of relatable to me. After all, Santiago went through the same struggles as I did when I first got into this country. she went through the language barrier and the fact that she and I always tried our best to speak English even though we were bad at it we were placed with the other kids instead of with the kids that spoke English but I persevered and didn’t get left back any grade and I thank mom for it because she would push me to read books and do stuff so I can learn the language faster and thanks to her I was able to handle after myself just enough to keep up with the other kids. and I also like this story better because it shows a different case than what we have been reading. this shows a girl trying to get over the struggles of learning and adapting to a new environment that is new to her and thanks to her perseverance she got through it.
