A few of you have asked me how many participation points you currently have. I don’t have an easy answer, because there are several things I’m not keeping track of during the semester, because they’re easier to add up at the end of the semester. But hopefully I can help you get an idea of where you stand.
Remember that you need 20 participation points for full participation credit. Participation will count for 5% or 15% of your overall grade, depending on which grading scheme gives you a higher grade.
The ways to earn participation points since we moved to online classes have been updated. You can keep earning participation points until midnight on Monday night. Points come from:
- sharing your work on the board during class
- A few of you were able to accumulate a few of these points before we were sent home.
- I’ve been keeping track of these.
- participating in OpenLab discussions
- Every time you’ve submitted a post on the OpenLab, you’ve earned one participation point.
- I’ll add these points up at the end of the semester.
- You can find one of your posts and click your own name to see how many posts you’ve submitted.
- You can continue to share your work on the OpenLab between now and Monday. I haven’t given you an official “Test #3 Solutions” assignment, but go ahead and submit a Test #3 solution if you like.
- You can also submit posts for old assignments up until midnight on Monday.
- attending office hours
- I’ve taken attendance at in-person and online office hours.
- I have been keeping track of these points during the semester.
- attending the tutoring center (ask the tutor for a verification slip)
- I collected verifications slips for in-person tutoring before we got sent home and I’ve received reports about your scheduled online tutoring sessions from the ALC.
- I have been keeping track of these points during the semester.
- asking a question in the WeBWorK question/answer forum on the OpenLab
- You can access the page for particular WeBWorK problems by clicking the “Ask for Help” button at the bottom of the page.
- I’ll add these points up at the end of the semester.
- filling out the weekly check-in form (since moving online)
- I’ll add these points up at the end of the semester.
- You can submit one more before Monday night.
- Submitting the practice quiz or practice test when we transitioned t online classes.
- I’ll add these points up at the end of the semester.
- Attending the pet party or review sessions held during the breaks between in-person and online classes.

- Taking practice exams
- You can earn one point for taking a practice exam in WeBWorK.
- You can earn a second point for submitting your written work; see the post for instructions.
- You can take one new practice exam every 24 hours between now and Monday night.
- I’ll add up these points at the end of the semester.

Some students have questions about CUNY’s new flexible grade option. You can see more information about the credit/no credit option here. Make sure you talk to your academic advisor and financial aid advisor if you’re considering this option. If you decide to switch to the credit/no credit option, you’ll have do this yourself on CUNYFirst (you might have to wait until course grades have been assigned).

The deadline to withdraw officially from the course is this upcoming Thursday, May 14.
Iâve received a few questions about yesterdayâs email from the chair of the Math Department, so I hope I can clarify a few things for everyone.
- The email was sent to the whole class.
- The investigation she referred to was about an academic integrity violation we found out about on Test #3a. If you did not commit a violation on Test #3a, then you do not need to worry about this investigation.
- The investigation is completely separate from Test #2 and the appointments some people have scheduled with me to talk about Test #2.
- Test #3b is still on for tomorrow – Wednesday 12pm to Friday 12pm this week; our Test #3 interviews are still on for next week.
Some of you are probably wondering what is going on. The fact is that there has been widespread cheating in this class (even when we were meeting in person). Usually these matters can be dealt with privately, so you might never know that your classmates got caught cheating, but this is not a usual semester and have been required to have more of these conversations publicly.
I know that this whole thing is incredibly stressful for all of you and I want to remind you that I can be extremely flexible about everything except for:
- the final exam,
- academic integrity.
Just let me know what you need.
While I understand the temptation to reach for just a little outside help when youâre as stressed as you are and it’s as easy as it is, I also want to remind you that committing violations can have lasting consequences for you. For example, there will be instances in your future ânot just for academic things, but for jobs youâre applying for as wellâwhere you will have to produce your transcript or ask a professor for a letter of recommendation. This will be difficult with a violation on your record. You donât want what feels like a little thing now to follow you around for years and I donât want that for you either.
CUNY has done something really amazing for students caught in this situation this semester by extending the deadline to withdraw from a class until May 14. Iâve already had conversations with some students for whom this class is an extra source of stress and they just want to be done with it. This is completely understandable and not something you should feel bad about. If this is where you are, then getting this course off your plate is the responsible way to handle it. Committing academic violations is not. I want you to make the decision thatâs best for you.
Finally, the chairâs email mentioned the app/website Symbolab and why we donât recommend students use it (or anything like it) at all. Itâs definitely a violation to present Symbolabâs work as your own, even if youâre just copying your previous notes. But thereâs another problem even with using it as you study. Symbolab is really incredible at finding answers. Really impressive. But, as the chair mentioned, if often solves problems in weird and roundabout ways. It uses techniques that are inappropriate for the problem and refuses to use the appropriate (and easier) ones. Even using Symbolab (or anything like it) to study can give you false confidence that you actually know whatâs going on.
The reason that matters for this class is that the learning outcomes on the official course outline (which is linked from the OpenLab site and which we discussed on the first day of class) does not include âfind answers.â The learning outcomes list the techniques that you are to use and apply in this class. I am held accountable by the department and the college for assessing whether these learning outcomes have been met, and what I have to go on is what you write down. Itâs obvious if youâre using Symbolabâs approach because itâs often an inappropriate approach, even if youâre not just copying from Symbolab directly onto your paper. I donât want to tell you you canât use Symbolab (or anything like it) ever, but itâs very risky and you should know the risks.
Your tests are already open book. What I would do if I were taking tests like yours is open up several tabs on my browser with the relevant chapters of the textbook before starting the test. If you havenât actually read them (though you should; thereâs good stuff in there!) scroll through them for a few minutes so you know where the definitions are, where the formulas are, and what kinds of examples there are. You can refer to these in your written work. As usual, show aaaaaaallll your work.
