While reading Gruba’s work, the main word that I would describe this essay would be “expressive”. She starts off her work by giving us a preview of how she saw how Cummin’s book portrayed Mexicans. She did not hesitate to hold back words in both Spanish and English to show how disturbing the inaccuracy of Cummin’s book was. I agreed with Gurba’s frustration towards the book because they used certain phrases that many groups would find offense such as “these people” and the overall stereotypes directed towards Mexicans. My critique towards Gurba’s work would be that she should include more examples that would correct the stereotypes mentioned such as mentioning oneself as “Latinx”. Hence, my appreciation towards the end when Gurba calls out Cummins for claiming she understood Mexicans by saying, “patiently teaching me things about Mexico” and “you should read if you want to learn more about Mexico”

Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. I’ll be available through Zoom and will send an invitation via email that you should keep all semester. Try to join my meeting at the start of the hour, not at the end—since I may be talking to other students or have another appointment after the hour is up. If those times don’t work with your schedule, we can schedule a different time. This means you’ll have to schedule an appointment in advance. I suggest you have multiple times in mind, since your schedule may not mesh with mine!
