After reading Myriam Gurba’s work, it was interesting to see an experience that involved a specific story that has to do with the racial inequality of a POC when it comes to white people. What I enjoyed about this was being able to understand that Cummins, a white person pretending to be a POC in the reading, wrote a book to tell a story and give representation to an experience that she knows nothing about. Being able to see the struggles that POC who are Mexican or anywhere in Latin America that try to cross the border and that experience being twisted to fit the palette of a white person upset Gurba a lot, which is very understandable since I have the same experience as a POC when dealing with white people. In terms of my curiosity, I would like to ask Gurba does she feel like having white allies does more harm than good to help bring awareness to POC struggles?

Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 AM – 1 PM. I’ll be available through Zoom and will send an invitation via email that you should keep all semester. Try to join my meeting at the start of the hour, not at the end—since I may be talking to other students or have another appointment after the hour is up. If those times don’t work with your schedule, we can schedule a different time. This means you’ll have to schedule an appointment in advance via email. I suggest you have multiple times in mind, since your schedule may not mesh with mine!
