Title of Piece: Whatever Happened to______? Author’s Name: Anonymous
Plot: I enjoyed the plot due to it becoming one of the darkest experience of the author’s life, from the beginning of being in a passenger seat of a car. I didn’t expect the story to turn out the way it did from the middle to end of the story. To put it precisely the middle and the end of the story was unexpected. Overall the plots made the story interesting and made it so that the audience can learn something from it and raise awareness.
Characters: I liked how the author tried to protect her daughter from the toxic masculinity of her father. It’s drastically sad that the daughter had to witness her father’s hurtful actions towards her mother, no child should have to go through that experience, especially at an early age at that.
question: How close was your ex-husband to your daughter?
What’s your daughter’s opinion in all of this?
Point of View: The author gave us a few examples to why her husband acted the way he did, such as selling way too little in his writing, leaving him a failed writer compared to his wife. I enjoyed the end where the author claimed that she is still there surviving with many other victims of societal, domestic violence, toxic masculinity and such. She brought in light the awareness that there are many other women who are suffering or have suffered from domestic violence and they aren’t silent.
Setting & Context:
Question – Did your ex-husband work a different job on the side of being a writer?
Did you guys have a relationship therapy at any point?
Voice & Style: I enjoyed the word choices the author made to describe her toxic ex-husband such as, cyclone, car wreck, and an assault.
Dialogue: I liked how the author brought the line her ex-husband said into discussions “Your mama gets away with too much…”. After all her explaining this dialogue just make sense to be said out of pure jealousy of her ex-husbands failure in terms of his writing career.
Hi Mohammed, I enjoyed reading your critique and I totally agree with you, I did not expect the story to turn out the way it did either. It saddened me that her husband never thought about her daughter and the impact his actions were going to have on her. At one point, I though that because of all he did to her, she was going to stop writing but I’m glad she did not let that stop her.
Hi, Mohammed great critique! I also enjoy the end of the story and agree with you that the author shed light on the fact that the author did not only talk about her own suffrage but also about other women who are suffering or have suffered from domestic violence in silence.
Many women have given up on their dream and golds to become a mother and a wife, and are unhappy because they did not get the opportunity to live the life they dream of living. I am happy the author did not give up writing due to her situation, and kept on fighting for what she believes in.
Hi, Mohammed I enjoyed reading your critique. I agree with you in the fact that it must have been hard for their daughter to witness all of the trauma that he put them through, i also wonder how she turned out like how it all affected her. i also like how you payed attention to how the author described her husband(I mean it was hard not too) but i also like her choice in words when describing him. they fit with how he is.
Hi Mohammed, I really enjoyed reading your formal critique. I enjoyed reading about your plot and those questions. I liked how you explained how the author tried to protect her daughter. What was sad is that her daughter had to see all those abuses to her mother. It might affect her future. I also liked how the author is so strong and she is taking good care of her daughter.
Hey Mohammed, I definitely agree with how sad the entire situation was. The fact that Anonymous’ daughter had to witness such violence and toxic behavior at such a young age is heartbreaking. She’ll never forget that. I’m really glad that Anonymous got her out of harm’s way and didn’t let the situation end her career. It shows a huge deal of strength.
