ENG 1141

Title of Piece: ā€œWhatever Happened To ___?ā€

Reading this piece showed me how hard it has always been being a woman where everything is more important than our careers and dreams. I enjoyed the story from beginning to end, reading how she managed to be a mom, wife and teacher while being a good writer too confirmed to me that to women there nothing impossible, they fight for what they want no matter how many things they have on their plate. Throughout the story Anonymous highlights how women has to be better than average but still disappear, which was not going to be her case, from her point of view we can tell that she never doubted herself, she knew everything was a process that required time and dedication, which she demonstrates at the end of the story when she finalizes saying ā€œtell them, Iā€™m still writingā€ letting the audience know that her work was not going to vanish from sight this time, that she was going to keep shining while doing what she loved the most.

I admire how she did not let her husband go trough her head andĀ Ā minimize her desires to write, she was so determined to publish her third novel that not even the fear of her ex-husbandĀ Ā assaulting her, stopped her. On the contrary, it made her stronger and even more determined to keep writing, to become a voice for so many women out there whose voices have been taken away by the patriarchy. I have two questions for the author. The first one is, after everything you have been through with your husband and his jealousy towards your job, what would you tell women out there living the same things you once did? My second question is, what needs to be done to foster a transition from a patriarchal era to a more egalitarian one?Ā

Luz Mery, great response. I too appreciate how the author did not allow her fear of her ex-husband prevent her from pursuing her passion. With her husband trying to destroy everything great in her life, I believe that the author realized that the only thing he can never touch is her talent for writing. This talent that drove him crazy, is the same one that is raising awareness about an issue that many women are going through. The author realized that her talent as a writer is her greatest weapon against him, hence why she published her third book.

Hi Luz Mery, I enjoyed reading your response. I agree with you that after reading this essay that women really do struggle to achieve their goals in any industry. I also, liked how throughout her struggles she showed to be a resilient person, who won’t stop at nothing to be a published author.

Hi Luz, I really enjoyed reading your response. I liked how you talked about the author being a successful person. She indeed is a successful woman who takes good care of her daughter, works a full-time job, and even is a writer. She indeed is a great mother!

Luz Mery , I really like your response to anonymous critique. I agree when you say that as women there is nothing impossible for us because we are stronger and what we propose we achieve it. We are not synonymous of weakness , we are synonymous of greatness.
