Chapter one of “Truth&Beauty” was a pretty interesting read. It started off with that one undeclared friendship that the author and Lucy, her friend had. Weird start of a relationship but through to the end is when they truly became friends through Lucy’s perspective more than Pratchett. I really enjoyed the literary devices the author used to describe some of her life experiences, such as her accidents, giving the reader an understanding of what went down during those times. I also enjoyed the gawking terminology they used to describe how some people stare you down with all the unattractive human emotions that you really don’t want to be in a situation as such. The gawking of people is kind of relatable because you can end up in a situation where people actually does that to you, speaking from experience. Now going back to their friendship, I think Lucy was friends with Pratchett due to circumstances because at one point Lucy needed someone to depend on or befriend so she doesn’t feel as lonely as she is. On the other hand I agree with Pratchett on what she said about her knowing Lucy more than Lucy knew her because as chapter one unfolds we mostly read about Lucy and her romantic/sex life. We didn’t really read much about Pratchett’s bonding with Lucy with one of her stories or her life experiences.
Some questions I have are 1) How did Lucy end up in Scotland?
2) Why was Pratchett so invested in Lucy?
Hello Mohammed
I enojoy your critique of Partchett work. I too like the way the author was descriptive when she describe her accident and lucy physical apperience.
The way she describe the way people would stare at lucy gives her readers a vivid imagery of what it was actually like for her and lucy inthat moment.
I also like how you summarize lucy and Partchett relationship from a view point of lucy wanting Partchett as a friend out of convenience and needing a best friend so she is not lonely. I agree with your viewpoint and believe that if Partchett wasnt accepted at the same college and was a familiar face they would not have been friend.
Question : Do you think that Partchett story was too focuses on Lucy life and not enough on hers?
