Gulliver, Amelia, et al. āPerceived Barriers and Facilitators to Mental Health Help-Seeking in Young People: a Systematic Review.ā BMC Psychiatry, BioMed Central, 30 Dec. 2010, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3022639/.
Summary:
The authors state that there are reasons why young adults do not seek professional help. Somes of the reasons are cost, transportation, confidentiality or they might feel like they can handle it. Also, they might be afraid of others finding out. Depression and anxiety are the most common in adolescents and young adults. According to the study, one of the biggest reasons they do not seek help is stigma and discomfort. Discussing their mental health can be hard sometimes and even embarrassing to some which is completely understanding.
Reflection:
I agree with the text one hundred percent. Most of the reasons and problems that some do not seek professional help is understandable. āAs well as concerns about cost,ā not a lot of people have the money or insurance to seek help or have the services available to them. I can relate to some of these reasons myself. I sometimes feel like I got it and I can handle it but there is too much that I can take and handle at the same time. We all break at some point.
Quotation:
āYoung people perceive a number of barriers to help- seeking for mental health problems. These include stigma and embarrassment, problems recognising symp- toms (poor mental health literacy), and a preference for self-reliance.ā (Pg. 7)
