Part 1: As I sit down to reflect on my time in this English class, It was certainly an interesting semester to start off with , who’d ever thought they’d be such a major pandemic, and all the classes being transferred online. This had such a big impact on us students and our learning capabilities . It was much better to be able to work with the professor and your colleagues 1 on 1, you would have a better sense of what you’re working with. One thing I was able to really get into was discourse communities, I didn’t this was even a thing. Being able to do research on it and also doing projects on it helped learn a lot. I have learned how to communicate with my community and understand what kind of discourse there are. It is so nice that I have understood how to analyze the sources of my bibliography. It makes things so much smoother to be able to actually compose what I want to learn. In addition, writing an annotated bibliography help me to learn skills relating to careful reading and highlighting the key points of a research report and to summarize the material effectively in a manner that encourages the reader to assess its relevance and utility in relation to the research issue or research subject.
I thought during this semester of English 1121 that I had acquired the opportunity in certain respects to express what I wished to communicate to the reader. I’m not only looking for grammatical errors, but I’m looking at opportunities to make my sentences more productive and coherent. However, I hope that this technique will continue to help me to further develop my writing in the future. After reading the articles and stories we experienced this semester, my strong points as a reader have also certainly improved. For me, writing has become a significant form of speech. I find myself very soft-spoken and it’s typically tough for me to speak orally and I can’t quite manage to find the right words to say. I find like I am more expressive on what I want to say and have more power over it. I have learned new writing skills and progressively learned how to communicate with readers, as this semester advanced towards its conclusion. Without any plans or structure, until I would just start writing my papers, along with no good idea of where I would go with the assignments, now I have more basic idea it revolves around thesis or introduction of what I’m writing. Another ability I learnt was to respect my peers’ reaction, so it helped get my peers’ point of view so that I can correct my errors in writing. Overall it was a great semester, you live and you learn !
Part 2: Two smaller pieces I would like to include in my portfolio are Micro-Activity #7 and #8. I was still frustrated with micro activity # 7 on what to write, either a speech or a letter. In reality, I ended up writing on both of them to get a better understanding of which audience crowd I’m still trying to get out this message out to. It took me a while but because its something of a larger audience and message is understood more, I ended up sticking with the speech. The reason I picked this piece in my portfolio is that they were asking about what I was struggling with in my Unit 1 writing task for Micro Activity #8. At first, I thought I did pretty well but it turns out that it wasn’t as successful as I had hoped. I also chose this since I’ve never written a speech before, which I’d definitely use to remember the mistakes I’ve made in the future to avoid.
