Micro-Activity #10: Brainstorming Research Topics

Problem: Deforestation

Cause: Forests are often destroyed to allow agriculture to produce daily necessities such as beef, palm oil, and rubber. Palm oil and rubber plantations do not absorb nearly as much carbon as the forests they replace and have very little biodiversity, whereas livestock farming impacts are well known.

Problem: Human Rights and access to justice.

Cause: There is a fragile moment in our country when human rights, liberty, and harmony are under threat. There is a further erosion in political and civil liberties. In most of the world, nationalism is on the rise. It continues to undermine the fabric of democracy and infuse people with terror, resulting in violations of human rights, weapons proliferation, proxy wars, and waves of refugees.

Problem: The need for gender equality

Cause: Social barriers to women’s economic and personal freedoms have traditionally existed. When they are prohibited from going to school for financial reasons or deemed unnecessary, they are deprived of the right to vote since they are young. Worldwide, women still earn less than men, and women with children tend to do even less. It is a waste of potential and hinders progress towards barriers to global prosperity.

Problem: Habitat and biodiversity loss

Cause: At what scientists estimate to be about 1,000 times the average pace, extinctions are happening. Animals and plants are losing us. We also damage our ecosystems and throw them out of balance because of these systems’ complicated and complex nature, the effects of which we cannot anticipate.
