I will choose Douglass’s speech as my model. I want to express my thoughts to the audience in public. The main difference of Speech and letter are the recipients. Since the audience has various social backgrounds. When writing a speech, I need to be more careful about whether my words, quotations and evidence can be accepted by most of the audience. I think it would be a challenge for my writing. My audiences are high school students who are a few years younger than me. I was once one of them, listening to the senior’s speech under the stage. I am going back to my high school as a college student to give a speech. I have learned the concept of discourse community and understand the importance of it. I hope to explain to the students what discourse community is and how it works through my speech. The topic of my speech is two-way communication, which is mainly for the DC of Newcomers High School. Most of the students here are new immigrants. They come from different countries and speak different languages, but they are learning English in order to communicate with each other. So the main problem in this DC is that students have language barriers and cannot communicate in English fluently. Students here are divided into small groups based on their races and languages. The lack of communication between groups is the biggest problem in Newcomers High School Discourse Community. So I will solve communication problems and help them quickly integrate into American high school life. Another key point of my speech is to tell everyone the benefits of mastering two or more languages for communication. Some students may wish that they were born in the United States, so that they don’t have to worry about learning English, but I want to tell them the languages from their original places are their most precious treasure.
