Quote 1:” They loved their country better than
their own private interests; and, though this is not the
highest form of human excellence”

Paraphrase: There are some people that love their country more than their
life there are people that are so fanatic with their country and they do not care
about their family.

Response: I believe that its both ways. Now days politicians may chose to
work as a politician because of the income they receive or there other politicians
that chose to work because they lover their countries and they don’t want it to
be ruined.

Quote 2:” Oppression makes a wise man mad. Your fathers were wise men, and
if they did not go mad, they became restive under this treatment. They felt
themselves the victims of grievous wrongs, wholly incurable in their colonial
capacity. With brave men there is always a remedy for oppression.”

Paraphrase: The use of the malicious power will make people go mad. Oppression
will make even smart people go mad and do bad things and they will feel their
pain. But sometimes if there are strong minded men there you could control oppression.

Response: People must stop going mad because they didn’t hear their opinion
or their voice isn’t being heard by their leader. They use violence and destroy
everything.

Part2

Quote 3: “According to this fact, you are, even
now, only in the beginning of you[r] national career, still lingering in
the period of childhood”

Response: His writing in this sentence was supposed to reach everyone and I liked
on how he used the you[r] because “you” and “your” has 2 different meanings.

Quote 4-5: “Mr. President, Friends and Fellow Citizens” “Friends and
citizens”

Response: since we are writing a letter, I see that Douglass is still
writing/speaking in formal and how he remains in the same tone and speaking to his
audience he tries to keep a closure between him and the audience
