Quote 1: “A DC has a potentially discoverable set of goals. These may be publicly and explicitly formulated (as in ā€œmissionā€ or ā€œvisionā€ statements); they may be generally or partially recognized by its members; they may be broadly consensual; or they may be separate but contiguous (as when older and younger members have different ideas about the best future direction of the DC.” (22)

Response: What I like about this quote is that it is self-explanatory, before reading this article I didn’t know what a DC was and ain’t quite sure if I’m understanding what a DC is, but what I’m sure of is that a Discourse Community may share a common set of goals, experience, aims or even attributes and that regardless of the differences, age or groups a DC might have, there is always a consensus of opinion within the DC.

Quote 2: “A DC has an explicit or implicit hierarchy and/or structure which,Ā inter alia, manages the processes of entry into and advancement within the discourse community.”(27)

Response: Although this might not refer to society as a whole and more to a set individuals or organizations the truth is that social stratification has been part of our daily lives. This tells me that a DC has a body of authoritative officials organized in nested ranks that among other things dictates who, how and when someone can join the DC, which is common in most groups or organizations you might want to form part of.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)

I joined ASHRAE about 2 years ago, an American professional association seeking to advance heating, ventilation , Air conditioning and Refrigeration systems design and construction. its members are composed of building services, engineers, architects, employees and others concerned with the design and construction of HVAC&R systems in buildings. The society funds research projects, offers continuing education programs, and develops and publishes technical standards to improve building services engineering, energy efficiency, indoor air quality and sustainable development. The way we communicate is through conferences and emails, this year we have a great conference and Expo in Orlando Florida from Feb 1-5 where nearly 2800 people attended including building engineers, architects, students and other industry professionals.

National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS)

I joined the Honors organization which recognizes and elevates high-achieving students about 2 semesters ago. NSCS provides students with career and graduate school connections, leadership, and service opportunities, it also gives out scholarships, awards and chapter funds to help members attain their goals. as of right now communication is online because of the pandemic but before that we had Chapters plan activities, social gatherings and community service projects regularly.

CityTech English 1121 OL12

Although writing is not my strong suit, this class is a DC which goal or aim is to develop or strengthen our writing skills to understand principles common to analytical writing, discern the differences between personal writing and writing for academic and other audiences and show awareness of an aptitude with voice and style appropriate for these audiences and finally develop good research skills and quality source material. Also what I like is that you get feedback from peers and finally reviewed by the professor, and our main form of communication is through emails or virtual office hours.
