Quote 1: “Thus, members of a DC may have different first languages, different religions, and belong to diverse ethnicities”

Response: This quotation was particularly interesting to me because of how common and vague it sounds. It states that members of the discourse communities have differences throughout language, religion, and ethnicities. This was intriguing as it is comparable to an everyday interaction between people at a shared location. For example, somebody who has a coworker at their local workplace may have a completely different religion or speaks a different language, however, this doesn’t mean it is a discourse community. Although, there are six specific identifications for a discourse community, there are very vague points to see the difference between a DC and a non DC. Doesn’t this make it questionable whether every location has their own DC? Does simply sharing goals and such give a community the title to be “discourse”? Nonetheless, the quote stood out to me because of the indifference between members of the DC versus strangers who pass by each other on a daily interaction.

Quote 2: “Indeed, many types of discourse communities develop shorthand expressions, such as abbreviations and acronyms, to aid speed of communication”

Response: This certain quote immediately drew my attention as I am an individual who uses abbreviations on a constant basis without realizing I am. This brings up a point as to whether most discourse communities involve younger generation peers or older generations. Millennials tend to grasp towards shorthand expressions as often as they can, especially when conversing with one another over instant messaging. If this is the care, why is there dispute between the older generation versus younger people when both groups commit the same act? Additionally, millennials are unaware if they are apart of a discourse community or not. For example, mentioned in the text, there was questioning whether a sorority/fraternity was a DC, and I agree that it is. I agree mainly due to the fact that it was exploited that younger kids use abbreviations in their text messaging. In the end, I believe that DC is made of younger generation individuals with the popular abbreviations that is commonly used such as “lol” or “brb”.

This business is a place of discourse in a way. It’s made up of me and a handful of my friends, an apparel company. At the beginning, we all put all our thoughts on the table, such as our imaginative concepts, and we selected our crowd to see how the result will be. We advertised on social media and had a great outcome, many people loved the idea or concept. There would be different collections, such as a collection of spiders or a collection of blossom, and each set will have its own style for a particular time or season. At the end of the day, we all had one goal: to place these patterns on the clothes and see people wear and display them, showing our company some love. We only want our work to be noticed by people, and hopefully others, enjoy the projects we’ve placed out and get positive reviews so that they can share with their peers as well. (P.S. the company is still in the works)

Also, each of our courses are an indicator of DC, both of us for moving through our degree and having enough experience to be included in the future. The first two sentences explain precisely what we are studying and how it can be applied in the future.

I entered this group back in high school, primarily recognized as Lacrosse in the NYC itself. The key emphasis was on interacting as a squad and developing the talents as a player, communication and leadership. We also assisted each other in various respects, since one guy was better off shooting, although he didn’t have a lot more stick work than the other, while the other guy had more stick work, although he wasn’t such a great shot. And they were willing to support each other to correct their errors. In the end, we all worked hard to excel and win the tournaments. We will all support the local generation as a team, supporting them out by teaching them how the game is played, encouraging them the best we can. Our team’s inspiration was to inspire each other to become better lacrosse players and to be able compete high level college lacrosse.
