quote one: “Such communities tend to be small and isolated, such as those existing in mountain villages, or on small islands, or in desert oases. In some contrast, the former is a largely heterogeneous, socio-rhetorical assemblage of people who broadly share occupational or recreational experiences, goals, and interests.” I picked this quote since I found it quite interesting relating to discourse community. from this quote swales’ shows readers that anyone from anywhere can be part of a discourse community. people from small and isolated areas and people from big cities can all be part of a discourse community. in a way if you have the same ideas and goals as other people you cant be left out when it comes to the topic of discourse community since everyone in it is discussing the same ideas.
quote two: “we have come to see that these communities are, in fact, differentiated by various factors, such as how localized they are, what origins they have had, and what types of activity are central to their existence.” I picked this quote because it goes to show how much really plays into all these different discourse communities and how many there can be depending on all the factors swales listed. it shows how important it is to take all those factors into consideration when it comes to discourse community.
