In the speech called “what to the slave is the fourth of july” Douglass argued some of his opinions. He wrote to the president and his fellow citizens that you may celebrate the fourth of July but I shed tears for whatever is happening. He says how the nation needs to change, the nation is like a young child who needs to improve. He says how the black people fought for the nation’s independence day whereas they fought for their freedom too. Fredrick douglkass wants his audience to continue the work of those talented black people who did their best for the country and brought freedom. To conclude, Fredrick Douglass’s main purpose of the speech was to let people know the fourth of July is not a day to celebrate independence and freedom, it is the day to solve all those injustices, dishonesty and hatred that took place during the civil war. So it cannot be a nation that talks about how all men are treated equally.
It states in Douglass speech, “The evil that men do, lives after them, The good is often interred with their bones’ ‘ (Douglass 7). By this quote he means that bad things people do are kept alive even after they are gone. However, the good things people do are often kept hidden and not being appreciated. In Frederick Douglass’ speech he wanted to say how it’s so hard to acknowledge what black people did for the country and how easy it is to forget the hate, injustices that happened with the black people during the civil war.
According to the speech it states, Would you have me argue that man is entitled to liberty? That he is the rightful owner of his own body? You have already declared it. Must I argue the wrongfulness of slavery? (Douglass, 9). What Douglass is trying to say here is that should I still keep on going with the fact that black have done a lot for this country whereas the white people are not willing to accept it. In the speech Frederick Douglass talks about how there’s no point for him to keep fighting for black people’s lives since white people already admitted he fact black people will not be treated equally.
