What Douglass, Malcolm X, and Jiang have in common is that they all share their memories from the past and how times were a struggle. While their memories are all from different time periods, it’s important to note that they’re all share some sort of empathy, which I believe were the author’s intentions. I can 100% relate to Jiang’s story because all of my parent’s bloodline only spoke a foreigner language which makes me feel connected quickly. While the others like Douglass and Malcolm X didn’t made me feel connected as much as Jiang’s story, I can still feel what they went as when they’re writing their centerpiece, and I couldn’t also imagine being in prison not knowing how to read and write.
