One moment I found useful in “How to Read Like a Writer” is when the author states “If I were writing this, where would I go with the story? If the author goes in a different direction…I will ask myself, why did they do this? What are they telling me?” (pg79). This caught my eye because I never thought of these questions when I read them. I would simply read without trying to figure out why the author shaped the story in that way. I will use this in my own readings so that I can get a better understanding and build a better connection with the author. In other words, I would be more engaged in reading when I am trying to figure out these questions in my head. After answering those questions, I would be able to understand the purpose of how and why the author shaped the reading and use it in my own writing to improve my writing skills.
