In the Allegory of the Cave the setting takes place in a cave (hence the name of the title) and there are prisoners chained up who have been there since childhood. The prisoners are facing the wall of the cave and behind them is a fire which is the only source of light. The fire helps cast shadows which is the only thing prisoners see. The prisoners think all of life is based on the shadows, this is considered their “reality”. One of them was able to escape from the cave one day and found out what he was seeing through the shadows were a lie. Life is far much more than just shadows. Therefore he ran back into the cave the tell the others about the real truth but they didn’t believe him. The escaped prisoner knew his truth but the others didn’t, they were stuck onto only one closed-minded idea.
