WELCOME! Here are your responsibilities to complete BEFORE our first class on July 6:
I like to start my classes with a quote and/or a question to get things started:
When you write, it’s like braiding your hair. Taking a handful of coarse unruly strands and attempting to bring them unity. Your fingers have still not perfected the task. Some of the braids are long, others are short. Some are thick, others are thin. Some are heavy. Others are light.
Take a moment and think about the following questions. We’ll discuss them in class, but I’m putting them here for you to consider before we meet:
Anyone who has braided hair knows it is a challenge. It’s a skill. It’s not something you can learn overnight. Braiding and writing are both skills that need time, effort, and a lot of patience. Everyone in this class is bringing different experiences with writing–the good, the bad, and the so-so.
This class is going to focus on the basics of writing. We’ll be talking about summarizing, quoting, and analyzing texts. The goal is to ready you to take ENG1101 or ENG1101 CO. This class will be intense and require a lot of writing, reading, writing, and rewriting!

Be sure to check out my introduction. You don’t have to do the assignment at the end–just yet–but start thinking about what object you’ll write about! (Curious? Go to the link and read!)

If we were meeting in person, I’d show you one of my favorite pair of shoes: Red Doc Martens. I love these boots. They look awesome, although I admit they aren’t as comfortable as they used to be. They’re also getting ragged and worn–I think I’ve owned this pair for nearly a decade. I know I’ve gone through at least two sets of inserts!
When I was in high school, I wanted a pair of Doc Martens, but couldn’t afford to have a “real” pair. Instead, I bought pairs of knock-off Doc Martens, which are fine and look basically like the real deal, but I knew in my heartest of hearts that they weren’t the same.
There was a point in my life after I’d been teaching awhile when I realized: “Hey, you’ve got enough money to buy the real thing!” And then I started shopping, which is the most fun about getting new clothes or shoes, in my opinion. At first, I was going to buy the traditional pair (black), but then I saw these red ones, and I decided, if I was going to splurge, I was going to splurge on something that stood out.
This might tell you a little something about me. If I’m going to sacrifice time or money (or both), I’m going to make that sacrifice memorable–to me, at least! Besides being a teacher, I’m a writer, and I spend a lot of time writing, writing, and rewriting before I send something out into the world. Why? Because I want to be sure that what comes out on the page reflects what is in my head, and sometimes it takes several drafts to get to this point. Like my choice of footwear, I want to make a statement that people will notice and remember.

Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12-1 PM. I’ll be available through Zoom and will send an invitation via email that you should keep all semester. Try to join my meeting at the start of the hour, not at the end—since I may be talking to other students or have another appointment after the hour is up. If those times don’t work with your schedule, we can schedule a different time. This means you’ll have to schedule an appointment in advance. I suggest you have multiple times in mind, since your schedule may not mesh with mine!
