So I have always had a thing for the steampunk sub-culture. So when I started searching the maker faire website the steampunk category instantly knew what I was gonna write about. So out of all the makers shown in the category I was interested in the one know as Dug North who makes wooden automata. Automatons are cool in their own right it usually found in old toys that would move by use of mechanical gears and cranks inside the toy. Dug North makes wooden automata that moves a small scene by use of a crank. Most of his creations are simple but they are very entertaining to watch.

Wow, these are pretty cool. I wish he would show more of the interior mechanisms, though, so we could see how the equipment works. I wonder how many of the moving parts are wood, and how many are metal. The dog/bird didn’t seem to have a lot of metal involved, so maybe all his other stuff is mainly wood, too.
