Essay #2 summary

Vanessa Espin

Times squares is like no other, tall lightning buildings with large TV screens that advertise movies, Broadway shows, food, etc. The people are from all over the world, tourist who stop for pictures, or to just stare at there surroundings, and locals who are usually in a rush, zigzagging there way to work, or home. Children always stop to take pictures with Elmo, Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, and many more cartoon characters that entertain the streets of Times Square for a living. However, this in not the only kind of entertainment you will find here. There are artist who perform for a tip, and those who go to the extreme like the naked cowboy, or the dancing Brazilian carnival women. There are a variety of Broadway shows playing, theaters, concerts, places to eat, almost an endless entertainment experience that will cost you a lot of money. The small food trucks are at every block, making the streets smell like hot dogs, and peanuts. It gets very loud with sellers shouting their promotion of the day, people talking loud, the beeping of the cars. Traffic is terrible here. The streets are filled with yellow cabs, and tourist buses. The subway is the best option. It has many Train options, that head to all boroughs.

Glendale, Queens is the neighborhood I live in, is pretty much quite all the time. The only thing I hear is the sound of the cars passing by, and cats. Everyone has a cat in this neighborhood. There is almost everything down Myrtle Avenue, supermarkets, laundry, salon, spas, bakery’s, etc. The options to dine are delis, pizzerias, Chinese food, German restaurants, and one dinner. The cost of entertainment and food is reasonable, you can eat with five dollars and head to the movies or the park. There is a small outdoor mall called “Atlas Park” where there is a movie theater, a few retail stores, and dinning places. The large forest park is very close too, love going there in the summer. There are no close by train stations, you would have to walk to the M (15 min), or there are buses like the Q55, B13 that take you to the L train. Some buses take you directly to the city, like the QM24, and the QM25.

My Neighborhood vs Time Square

Time Square: The noise, the lights, the insurmountable amount of people. You can’t throw a stick in Time Square without hitting an advertisement or someone in a costume taking pictures with tourists for tips. Time Square is a tourist haven for people who want the “New York City Experience” when they find themselves on the island of Manhattan. There’s always a cab to take or a restaurant that you can find in any small town.

My Neighborhood: Maspeth is the kind of town where you have 6 pizza places you could walk to within a few minutes. It’s quiet and not much to look at. The 2 elementary schools and middle school in the area make the weekday afternoons noisy and crowded. Once upon a time Maspeth was a majority Italian and Polish, but with the changing times it’s diversified into a melting pot.

essay #2 My neighborhood compared to Time Square

Courtney Lewis

Times Square the place that never sleeps! Tourist epicenter. You can find people walking at all times of the day and night. Bright Lights all time round. Con Edison is always happy. All races are blended in one big melting pot. Entrepreneurs are everywhere! Street vendors, street artists, Disney characters, cartoon characters, even Naked Cowboy and Cowgirl are all out to hustle for their pay. Yellow cabs, metro buses, Green cabs, and the subway system are all available to you to travel further than your feet can take you all for the right price. Retail stores, Restaurants, and Mom and Pop stores are everywhere, guaranteeing that will spend all of your money and regret it later.

My current neighbor is in Brooklyn Heights. I live on Henry street. The most boring street ever! It is like being deaf and having no hearing aid. You rarely hear noise. I even feel the people whisper when they walk on my block. I love it! All the people that past are usually tourist going to see the promenade or just walking around to see the neighborhood. School buses and Access-a-Ride take over the streets. I feel at night it gets colder than the rest of Brooklyn! a few blocks up to Clark street there is a train station. The 2 or 3 trains run there. There is where I feel civilization begins. Businesses are all over. They have everything you can imagine to purchase you just have to know where to go. Organic products epicenter. Everything is organic or somewhat healthy. Restaurants are slightly more upper class and expensive for no reason. The plus of the area is the Promenade. The View pf the city is breathe taking at times. It is kind of water down a little because I live there for two and a half years now.

essay #2 , step 1 .

Ann-Marie Totaram

Times Square – city lights, yellow cabs, tourist bus, traffic jamming, and people dressed up as Sponge Bob, Elmo, and Mickey Mouse trying to make some fast money. Crowded area where tourist are constantly stopping and looking around, taking pictures, while people from the area are rushing trying to go home from work. Area is always crowded and bright. With all the billboards around, clothing stores, restaurants, movie theaters and other attractions catching everyone’s attention. Guys at every block trying to get people to catch some comedy show. Streets are pretty clean, loud area, lots of buildings.

My neighborhood- living in Brooklyn between Bushwick and Broadway. The block is usually quiet, during the afternoon you’ll hear cars honking because school buses are causing traffic. Elementary school and two high schools 2 blocks away. J train line , and B38 bus running. Friendly people, everyone that passes you says “hello” or smiles. Not much too do around here though.

Response to ” Mother Tongue ” by Amy Tan

Vanessa Espin

While reading ” Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, I got caught up in her story right away. She described her mothers way of talking English very well. I was able to picture her and her mother throughout the hole story and it was very comic. The author started the story explaining her passion for writing, continued with the different kind of English she spoke at home with her mother and ended it with a gratitude feeling towards her mom who as been her inspiration throughout her carrier as a writer.

I found it compelling when she said ” Well according to my mother, there were very few limitations as to what Tom could have been and what Mary might have thought of him.” It wasn’t that her mom had “limited English” it was that she saw it as very open answer. There was more then one possibility and words you can play with.

I also found interesting when she said ” Some say they understand 50 percent of what my mother says. Some say they understood none of it, as if she were speaking pure Chinese. But to me, my mothers English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural”. While a third person might see it as broken or not even English at all, for Amy Tan it was completely understandable and normal. This was the language that she was taught as growing up and it was part of her identity.

Did Amy Tan study English to be rebellious and prove a point or because it was her passion?

The Purpose of her story is to connect with everyone but mainly those who have immigrated to the U.S. Bringing with them not only culture and variety but also creating their own version of English which has been passed on to their children. Also to let people know that we can learn more then one version of English, the one you speak at home and the proper one. To not limit yourself specially with language.

“I have a dream” response by Christine Mitchell

We all have dreams in where society could be one, hatred and violence will be put to a stop. Where blacks have equal rights, and not are abused by what is called the law. In “I have a dream” speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described his dream for his people. On  August 28, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did not only speak for himself, but for so many blacks who followed him. Till this very day his words are carried on to the hearts of those who are still working for that same dream. This speech is dear to me, because of the message it sends.

In 1863 Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, in which Negros who were enslaved were to be set free. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated “it came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity”, an end to all slavery. But did slavery really ended that day? As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. goes on to say “one hundred years later the Negro is still not free”, “one hundred years later the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and chains of discrimination”, we are now enslaved by the color of our skin. Since your skin is that of a black person you are not allowed the same rights to that of a white person. Decades have past and we are still enslaved by poverty with no hope, so are we really free.

No, Negro may have been free from captivity, but Negro was still very much enslaved by society. As the speech stated “America has given Negro people a bad check”, “a check which has come back marked insufficient funds”. America failed to honor their promise where blacks would have rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But even when Negro is let down, they still do not give up hope.  They still hope that justice will prevail. “Nineteen sixty three is not an end, but a beginning”, a beginning for change. In the pursuit to change we must not stoop to the act of violence the very thing we stand against. In our pursuit for change we must stand side by side one another and fight with our faith and soul.

In the speech something that stood out to me was the line where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated “we can never be satisfied as long as Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality”. This which is disgusting and unfortunate to say still is something that blacks face to this very day; for example the killing of black men brought on by people who are sworn to protect us. As a result of the killing of Sean Bell, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Cameron Tillman, Eric Garner to name a few, we are still putting up a fight to end police brutality. As a mother of a soon to be young black man, the prejudices my son may face due to the color of his skin based on ideologies originated long before him scares me.

I commend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his bravery and empowering words that will continue to ring in the ears of so many black people still to come. His message to end discrimination, his message that we shall all be counted as equals despite what the color of your skin may be. I hope that his message is resonated by those of power who are able to bring a change to the society. Never stop dreaming, stick by your dream, fight for it and believe in it.
