Case study#2: Clemson floor collapse Johan.Bravo

If I were to investigate the floor collapse, I would go to the Department of buildings in South Carolina, and request any relevant information. Such info would include maximum  occupancy of the space, any modification to the structure of the building in recent years, original plans and specification, the amount of live load and dead load the space can handle, and the rules of the building as for weather event that include dancing are allowed. After going over all the information about the building I would assess whether there was a mistake in the building plans themselves, if the builders used the wrong material or did a poor job in the actual construction. I would also check if  there’s been any structural damage that  would have led to the collapse. Also if the residents were not using the space as it was intended to be used. As for who’s to blame, I would deem the owner guilty for not having enforce the rules of the building such as occupancy limit, and the residents of the fraternity who had possible knowledge that the space could not handle such an event.

Case study #1- Johan Bravo

As a professional an architect in New York state is responsible to protect the health, welfare, and safety of the public. And given the fact that both the construction superintendent and the owner are okay with using lower strength concrete for a project that specifies strong concrete, needs to decide whether or not to sign off on this concrete for the Department of buildings.

As I said before an architect responsible to protect the public, and signing off on concrete that doesn’t meet the local building code would conflict with this responsibility. Not to mention that it’s morally wrong, seeing as how it could lead to the loss of life, given that it’s not designed to withstand the amount of loads it would have if the concrete was stronger. The right thing to do would be to confront both the owner or superintendent and show them that this decision to use weaker concrete is wrong or to report it to the department of building so that the appropriate actions can be taken.

Dream career – designing new public housing

I guess all my life I never really thought about where I would get a job, mostly if I could get a job. I never really had a dream career in mind until started learning about architecture here in citytech.  And as the years have gone by with all the projects I’ve done, I’ve noticed that I’ve really been more passionate towards improving public housing here in New York.

I’ve done researched about the public housing here in New York and I seen that not much has been done to really improve it. Even the organization NYCHA has done little to nothing to fix this issue and they’ve been working on this for the past couple of decades.

Two of my biggest projects that I have worked on were very well received by my professors and those invited for the presentations. Both projects were aimed towards improving public housing by creating more apartments with better living condition. I’ve seen the living conditions that most people have been forced to live in and it’s really heartbreaking which is why I wanted to work towards fixing it.
