when shooting a portrait is important to consider the direction of the light, that way  we can show certain areas of the face more than other and give the portrait a better overall mood.

the different of broad and short lighting is  the direction the lights are coming from as short lighting the shadowed side is closest to the camera.

the function of main lighting in a portrait once again is to determining which sides of the face to be lit or to shadowed and this is important for the overall composition of the portrait as main light lights the overall face with little shadows.

as for fill light alf of the face is shadow which works great for profile portraits.

for background light in a portrait gives a overall light that comes from the back, great background light just lights up about the shoulder just enough to light the rest of the face but without giving it a halo effect.

in all the portraits we shot in different lighting everything i understood but i would like to work more with fill lighting as i find it interested and would like practice and learn more about it.

Lovely shot. While the main light certainly can be thought of as lighting the face, it also casts the shadows. We tend to think lighting looks right or natural when there is one set of shadows. We base normal on the outdoor light of the sun which casts one set of shadows.

The fill light brightens the shadows. It does not cast any shadows.
