I think that this is a successful photo because the focus of the picture is clear and easy to see while the background is blurred out. I think it shows depth of field because the furthest parts of the picture are unfocused while whats nearer to the camera is in-focus. I also think this photo is successful because the poster has more color then the background which makes it stand out more.
This photo uses both depth of field and perspective. Depth of field refers to focus as you state and the converging lines of the buildings create perspective.
