The thing itself

The difference between the thing that is shown in a photograph or the subject of the photograph and the photograph, is that the subject can be different depending on who is looking at it because just like art, photography is subjective. The photograph can be more important than the thing itself because the photograph holds a thousand truths and lies, it holds a story, a moment in time. Perhaps, the thing itself is not as attractive as what they are doing at that specific moment.

Right. Photography is subjective. It displays the point of view of the photographer. Szarkowski is also arguing that the photograph become more important than the thing itself because it is what is remembered over time as the details of the actual event fade from memory.
