Question 1: After young Douglass loses his mistress as his teacher, what strategies does he practice to continue learning to read? Who does he turn to for help? How does he persuade them to help him?
One of the strategies that Douglass adopted to continue learning to read is reading anywhere he goes. When he met some little white boys he practiced his skills with them. Every errand he ran, he always had a book with him to read when he would finish what he had to do. Douglass always used to carry bread with him from his house which he would exchange for knowledge. With this, he learned many facts from the little white boys such as being a slave for lifeĀ
Part 2:
āThey both advised me to run away to the North; that I should find friends there, and that I should be freeā (Pg 3. Paragraph 2)
This quote has a deep meaning because it encouraged Douglass to run away from his masters. He knew he was too young to do so, so he learned how to write first. He would see a lot of ship carpenters write names of the part of the ship and he memorized this resulting in him remembering 4 letters. He would go to any boy he met and told them he was as good as them at writing. This then proceeded to him learning new letters and words. This quote is significant in my opinion because it made Douglass learn something new and useful in life.Ā
Jennifer: Part One is fine.
Part Two: Look for quote that lends itself to analysis, to deeper meaning. THe quote you chose is more matter of FACT. There is really no deeper meaning. It just says that these men advice Douglass to run away to freedom.
THink about the quotes that I discuss in class. The sentences, the parts, the quotes I chose from the text have a lot of meaning. They are rich quotes with a deeper meaning.
