As I woke up from my sleep, the familiar scent of breakfast greeted my senses, filling the house with warmth. After a couple minutes of snoozing, I got up from bed, knowing that another busy day awaited. In the kitchen, my mother was already at work, flipping arepas and stirring eggs.
“Ya alistate mija te vas a tardar,” she greeted me with a smile as I entered, the aroma of Colombian coffee calling me to the table. After 20 minutes of groggy movements, I was ready for school and had breakfast ready for me at the table.
After a warm breakfast, my mother slipped me a container with a packed lunch for school. The sight of the neatly arranged snacks and treats in the tupperware filled me with gratitude. “Gracias, Mami,” I said, feeling overwhelmed by her thoughtfulness. With a hug, a kiss, and la bendicion (sign of the cross), my mother sent me off to conquer the day. As I walked to school, her love and support echoing in my mind, I felt ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead.
