RAB Source Entry 1 Esha

PART 1: MLA Citation

Mervosh, Sarah. “Pandemic Learning Loss.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 28 Nov. 2022, https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/28/briefing/pandemic-learning-loss.html

Part 2: Summary

Many children lost their learning due to the coronavirus. Based on a prominent national test, nine-year-olds lost the equivalent of two decades worth of math and reading progress due to the pandemic. Due to remote learning kids could not learn as well. Researchers discovered that school districts that were remote throughout the 2020-2021 academic year saw losses that were up to three times bigger than those of districts where students were primarily instructed in-person. In Harvard and Stanford Universities, the researchers found poverty played an even larger effect in academic losses during the pandemic. Many poor children had to face a lack of access to technology. The students that needed help before the pandemic even started will need to face the biggest struggle and will need more help.

Part 3: Reflection

In the article “Pandemic learning loss” I agree with the writer. This is because she points out that kids did not do better in remote learning. Reading this article made me understand that not only did remote learning make kids understand less it also harmed them in a bad way. Kids’ mental health got worse, and it causes social isolation for everyone. This source tells me about my research question that all kids were left behind in mostly all their subjects. I disagreed with the writer that she did not give enough information on why poverty played a bigger role in academics during the pandemic. If the writer had put something more about poverty it could have told me how poverty played a bigger role in education.

Part 4: Rhetorical Analysis

The article is a feature article. The purpose is to tell the audience that remote learning was difficult for many students. The tone of this article would be logos and ethos. It states that “fully remote during the 2020-21 school year experienced declines up to three times greater than those of districts that mostly taught students in person”. This part is logos because the writer is stating facts that students faced a huge loss in learning. It states that “researchers at Harvard and Stanford Universities found that poverty played an even bigger role in academic declines during the pandemic.” This would be ethos because the researchers are saying that poverty plays a bigger role in learning which tells me that it is an important topic.

Part 5: Notable Quotables

“At a basic level, there is good evidence and a growing consensus that extended remote learning harms students.”    (By Sarah Mervosh)

“Black and Hispanic students, who had started out behind white and Asian students in fourth-grade math, lost more ground than those groups during the pandemic.”  (By Sarah Mervosh)

  1. How did remote learning affect students lives that they were unable to reach sustainable grades at such a “simple” time. Students had to be online in a call with their teachers and peers. What led to students being unfocused during class times? There could be better articles/ op ed that can possibly elaborate your research question more. Pardon me if i am wrong though(since i didn’t research this topic.)

  2. After reading your source entry I see that there is more I can add to my rhetorical analysis. At first it was confusing but I see now that it’s only because it has more than enough details of why you chose logos and ethos as the tone of this article.

  3. Esha — Good job overall!

Summary: Good job on this part! Can you tell the class what you did to write a good summary?

    Just a few pointers:

    ·     First sentence needs title author and MI — Remember?  Look at the How to Write a Summary worksheet.

    ·     IN a summary it’s a good idea to make a few references to the author using her name. SO – According to Mervosh, ____. OR Mervosh cites research from ______ that shows _____.

    Reflection

You could write a few sentences about your own ESHA’s OWN experience as a student in the pandemic. Do you feel that you lost some learning or skills or knowledge? For example –when you started up with school again: What subjects did you feel you forgot things or realized you had forgotten important skills?

    Rhetorical Analysis

I offer a better way to say here:  Mervosh uses the rhetorical appeal of ethos – when she refers to research from Harvard and Stanford, America’s best universities. This way, the readers will believe that the information she presents is reliable and credible.
