Reading Response to Malcolm X- Matthew Gonzalez

Part A:

Part B:” I was so fascinated that I went on–I copied the dictionary’s next
page. And the same experience came when I studied that. With every
succeeding page, I also learned of people and places and events from
history” Prison Studies para 8

I think that this quote is so important because because it shows that even while in prison he took his situation of endless time and was engrossed into a new desire of learning to read and learn to write. He took his time to better himself in a situation where most would grovel and hate every moment in the cell. Showing that even he had the idea to better himself while in a bad situation. I think he realized that to really understand for yourself you must first understand how to think for yourself. Malcolm’s passion for learning and reading, as well as how reading permanently changed his life. His thoughts have become more distinct since learning to read while imprisoned, and he is now able to think without having them described to him. Only then was when Malcolm saw himself in a new light, and in a sense left prison a different man then when he went in.

  1. Matthew: Try to pick a more significant, more meaty quote. This one that you picked is plain and obvious. Pay attention to the quotes that I discuss in class. The quotes that I pull out for class disucssion have deeper meaning.
