Part 2 Summary
The article â Schools are killing curiosityâ:Why We Need To Stop Telling Children To Shut Up and Learnâ, by Wendy Berliner is about how killing kids curiosity affects them in a negative way and it should be encouraged more often. Wendy Berliner showed us how schools and the teacher themselves play a big role in children’s curiosity being killed and discouraged from sharing their thoughts and curiosity because it was seen as unimportant and a distraction. Berliner mentions how young children in an American suburban school would ask a minimum of two and five questions over the course of 2 hours because they were discouraged from sharing their curiosity since it wasnât apart of the lesson they would stay silent. Berliner believes that kids being able to use their curiosity benefits them more than being discouraged about it. In the article Berliner illustrates her point by showing how children whoâs toys were replaced with cardboard boxes , tin cans , and pots and pans used their imagination and curiosity as they played and they seemed more engaged than if they were to be discouraged which would result in silence from the children.
