Part II- Summary
In the article, “Schools are killing curiosity: why we need to stop telling children to shut up and learn”, Wendy Berliner informs us how schools are suppressing curiosity within children. Berliner mentions research done by American researchers in 2013 that showed students of high performance lacked curiosity since they had seen it as a threat academically. They quoted that these high performing students would only ask questions if it helped them improve whiles others asked questions to help them better understand the topic. An experiment that took place at Ilminster Avenue nursery school in Bristol is mentioned as well. Two year old’s toys were replaced with new objects and the children’s curiosity increased. Berliner says that the headmaster, Matt Caldwell, stated that the children’s creativity and conversation skills have increased whiles convincing parents and teachers who were skeptical of this change. The article concludes with Berliner believing that the educational system should encourage more curiosity among the children.
