Part 2 Summary
In the article “‘Schools are killing curiosity’: Why We Need to Stop Telling Children to Shut up and Learn,” Wendy Berliner shows us how the school system plays a big role in why children are not as curious as they should be. The teachers also make students feel discouraged from asking questions. Berliner gives the example of curious children pointing out the rainy weather and thunder. The teacher then draws their attention back to the lesson about weather instead of feeding into the children’s curiosity. Berliner mentioned that in primary school, the teachers do not have time to stop for questions because they have a lot of targets to meet. According to Berliner, as children get older, they tend to not ask questions due to the countless times the teacher shuts their inquiry down. Wendy Berliner concludes that children should be encouraged to ask questions, even though it makes it harder for the teachers.
