PART 2: SUMMARY
In” Teenagers Are Struggling, and it’s Not Just Lockdown with mental health” Emily Esfahan Smith reports that teenagers are facing mental health crisis not because of the lockdown but because of the pressure to achieve which has increased in the past years. Dr. Luther, professor of psychology at Columbia University has study resilience of teenagers. The biggest threat to the mental health of today’s teenagers is not just social isolation but something else. When School closed last spring, something unexpected happened, student was well-being improved. As classes and exams were cancelled, grading moved to pass/fail and extracurricular activity eased, they report lower level of stress, anxiety and depression compared with 2019. Fifty-seven percent of students said that their parent’s expectation for their performance stayed the during their pandemic. According to smith she said parent wants their children to be happy and loving so they can’t avoid stress and depression.
Part 3: Reflection
I understand that teenagers are struggling with mental health, and lt’s not just lock down which I totally agree because when coronavirus pandemic began a lot of teenagers were committing suicide all because of depression. Depression is causing a lot of problems for the teenagers. In the article smith said,” Teenagers has had higher rates of anxiety and depression as compared with national norms”. I was very confused why teenagers were feeling depressed whiles they know they can play games or watch movies. I know that this pandemic has been hard for the teenagers. Now teenagers think taking drugs and drinking alcohol can reduce their stress.
Part 4: Notable Quotables
“According to psychologists who study adolescent resilience, one of the biggest threats to the well-being of today’s teenagers is not social isolation but something else-the pressure to achieve, which has intensified over the past year”.
“Carson’s story is not unique. The pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of millions. But adolescents have been hit especially hard. “
“If we want more-resilient kids coming out of the pandemic, then we need to heed a lesson of this past year — that the pressure to achieve is crushing the spirits of many young people and should be dialed back. Parents can play a vital role here. “
