(80-81) In this scene, Obama talks about his experience with racial d injustice and the insults he received when he was a kid. A kid in his seventh grade called Obama a “coon” in which Obama responded back with punching the kid in the nose causing him to bleed. a tennis pro told Obama to stop touching the schedule of matches pinned to the bulletin board because his skin color rub off. A woman in an apartment Obama lived in reported him to the manager when he stood behind her when he got into the elevator. Obama’s assistant basketball coach called him and other black students the n-word when the coach and his team lost to them in a pick up game of basketball.
“There are black people, and there are n******. Those guys are n******” This quote is very significant because it shows the reader about the type of cruelty Obama experienced. I picked this quote because Obama was part of the basketball team and for the coach to say that him could seem painful to Obama. This quote also shows that the ‘white folks’ had made 2 different groups of black people. Blacks who are lame and blacks who are cool.
In this scene, Obama learns that the world he is living in is filled with racism and arrogance. he was treated different specially because of his skin color. Obama realizes about himself that he is quick to take action against others as he was surprised when he let out his fury towards the basketball coach. He also realizes that the world he is living in is unfair to him. He experiences racism on the daily wherever he’s at.
