Reading Response RLW and F Douglass-Jordan Wilson

A- One thing that I have learned from ”How to read like a writer” is that writing can be very easy if you know what you’re doing, or it can be very hard if you don’t know what you’re doing. Also, what I have learned from ”How to read like a writer” is that readers have to extremly close attention to the things that there are reading so that they can better get the main idea of the passage that they are reading from. In the text it states ”The idea is to carefully examine the things you read, looking at the writerly techniques in the text in order to decide if you might want to adopt similar (or the same) techniques in your writing.” (Paragraph 6 Line 1-4) What this quote means to me is that has a reader it is important to pay attention

B-I lived in Master Hugh’s family about seven years. During this time, I succeeded in learning to read and write. In accomplishing this, I was compelled
to resort to various stratagems. I had no regular teacher.” What this quote means to me is that he uses to work very hard on life to get where he needs to be in order to learn how to read and write, also it was very hard for black people growing up to learn how to read or write because they were introduce to slavery. Also, another point of this quote that stands out to me is that he did not have a teacher like other privilege white people, so it made him work harder in life for the things that he wanted.

  1. You have chosen an important quote from Bunn’s essay, but you have not explained Bunn’s words in a precise way.

    SO–

You chose a good quote from Bunn’s essay. ”The idea is to carefully examine the things you read, looking at the writerly techniques in the text in order to decide if you might want to adopt similar (or the same) techniques in your writing.” (Paragraph 6 Line 1-4)

Now you need to focus on the key words: What does “looking at the writerly techniques” mean? What does it mean to “decide if you might want to adopt similar techniques in your own writing.”

Part B: Do the something here for Douglass’s essay.

You chose a good quote, but you need to focus and zero in on the key words: “I was compelled to resort to various stratagems. I had no regular teacher.” What does “compelled to resort to various strategems” mean in your own words. What significance is it that Douglass “had NO teacher”? and how is that related to his statement that he “was compelled to resort to various strategems.”

FOr this HW, your job is to explain Douglass’s words IN YOUR OWN WORDS, precisely and exactly.

  2. I agree with your perspective on Douglass’s quote. Douglass came from nothing due him being a slave. All the more reason why he worked harder than most in order to keep the little he had.
