Declaration / 38

The individuals who composed and signed The Declaration of Independence were willing to lose everything and be tried as traitors to their country. With the idea of fighting for your beliefs and values in mind, consider issues that affect you. What are some social justice issues (local or global) that you feel strongly about and might inspire you to act? Consider the history that Layli Long Soldier covers in her poem “38.” Are there any incidents or chapters in US history that you think are not as visible as they should be, and that you think are important for people to learn about? Are there contemporary incidents that you think should be included in historical accounts of our era so people in the future can learn from them?

Well im not really tapped into US HISTORY.. although it is the place i resign and live in. But i do feel like there’s way more topics and old moments that can be brought up and talked about now. Because people tend to forget and end up doing what was done in the past and in that matter it can cause a lot of conflict or misconceptions ( confusion). such as when chinese residents refuse to register to become citizens or even when the first picture was taken.. we can’t forget about these unsung moments

The social justice movement that I would act for is littering. Littering affects everyone and everything around us. It cause all types of pollution and health problems for people. I think what happened on 9/11 isn’t what really happened. The government trying to cover up the bad things that went on after the terriost attack. What did the government do? Is the theories true about it being an inside job? So many questions yet so little answers. I think the corona viruses is going to be a big historical event in the future. However it wouldn’t be the full story. How the president didn’t take it seriously at first, then the people who were struggling due to the pandemic wasn’t getting receiving much help, also small businesses being closed due to locked down.

A social justice issue I feel strongly about or just what came to mind is how major record labels give up and coming artists deals that they can’t escape. This doesn’t necessarily give me the need to act but I could research this and hopefully share the knowledge as well as ways to avoid these type of contracts.

Something that isn’t so visible that people should learn about is COVID. It was a big part of a decade and should be elaborated and shown how it could have been handled differently. This is for both questions about something being hidden and a contemporary incident.

Some social justice issues that I strongly believe in is abortion and gun violence since we see that a lot in the present day. As I was reading the poem I came to the realization that there are incidents in US history that people don’t give much of their attention to. For example during COVID when we were in quarantine there was a time where people started rioting in the city to get their voice heard due to the George Floyd incident that happened. This lead to looting in the city.

    • A social justice issue that I feel strongly about and inspires me to act is racism.
    • Yes, one chapter in US history that I think isn’t as visible as it should be is how Christopher Columbus truly was. I think that what people know about him is very brief and even sugarcoated considering the fact that he has a holiday named after him even after all of the horrible things he has done.

A Social Issue I feel strongly about is the corruption of the NYPD. Incidents I think aren’t really talked about is the fact that the officers go unpunished with most things they do.

    • one social justice issue that inspires me to act on , is the Climate justice crisis the world is slowly going through
    • this has always been a big chapter in the world , it is getting progressively worse in today’s day, an incident that happened in history was in 1986, there were scientist warning the president and big oil industires about how we will wipe out the human recources in such little time, and we seen them refuse to act on it , and even before that protests have been happening since 1970’s, and even today we see a bunch of activist still warning us.

-a social justifice issue I feel strongly and inspires me to act is racial equality, as it is something many still continue to deal with on a daily and how many are hurt by it.

-contemporary incidents that I think should be included in historical accounts of our era so people in the future can learn from them is how some states blocked and banned accessible abortions. I think it’s important to highlight this because of how it infringes and downplays peopkes rights to a procedure they are entitled to if wanted.
