Research Journal Final

In class we learned how to use advance searches, search catalogs and article databases to help us find sources for our research paper.  I knew already a lot about these different searches, but I did learn new things about using searches such as these.  For example, I learned about Google scholar.  I heard of Google scholar but never actually used it for any of my papers.  I always used regular Google because I believed it worked just as fine as Google scholar.  However, that is not true.  I already knew about catalogs and article databases from my English class, so there wasn’t anything different about it.  Using these new search engines will help me find proper sources for any paper I might have to do with any of my other classes.  This is definitely going to help me.

In learning how to do advanced searches and searching library and article databases, a new world of information was opened for me. Through the different ways of searching, things have definitely become more complicated than a simple keyword search, and that is something that I found to be effective. What will stay with me is the use of quotations and the use of the word “and”. Another thing that will stay with me are the different ways to look at writing a research paper. I always thought it had to be along the lines of a report rather than coming up with my own recommendations on the topic.

Well I have learned several things that I knew in brief, but in the class it was well explained. Like when using the databases we have to use specific keywords in order to have good results. One thing that I wasn’t sure about was the use of the search engines, when I wanted information I would only look in databases but, now I can look at any website and know if that information is relevant or not. As we all know when looking for information, we have a certain criteria that has to be made before choosing an article that can relate to any topic we are working on. I see myself looking back at Badke’s book because it contains a lot useful information when writing a research paper. It has several key points that can help anyone when trying to write a paper. I would recommend the book to anyone and I know that everyone will use it at least one time in their life. At some point we will look back and say that we learned so many things in this class that every student should take it and as might well enjoy it with the useful information it contains and gives to students.

Assignment 14 – Research Paper

Last week, when I went through advanced internet searching, it helped me a lot in preparing bibliography for my research paper. I was looking all over the place, without being focused and I was unable to find relevant information for my research topic, which was pretty frustrating. Now, I am relieved and I have adequate information for my project. Searching CUNY library database is also very helpful and I have scholarly journals for my project also. I have learned how to search deeply, precisely, and without spending so much time wandering on the web. I shall definitely utilize the skills that I have learned in this class, especially, in my coming writing intensive courses where I have to write research papers.

Organizing Your Resources

In this chapter of Badke’s Book, Badke introduced “register method” of resource organization. He suggested labeling our resources because it will be easier to retrieve and organize your sources later on. An example is when you have 50 pages of sources from different media; you would want to number the pages to prevent chaos. He also proposed that “you have to keep track of them, including enough bibliographical information” so you won’t need to go back and search again later. He introduced many helpful tips in how to organize your resources. The most helpful tip, in my opinion, is his answers to writing anxiety. I tend to have a lot of information, but I never knew how to start.

Notes for today, reminder about the outline due Friday, and reading and blogging for Monday, November 14

Today we finished crowdsourcing website evaluation criteria and determined that currency, expertise, objectivity, and accuracy were some important criteria on which to evaluate web content. We also played the evaluation game in class. We have a winning team: Randell, Jonathan, and Lukasz scored the most points with the websites they found, a piece on the site TriplePundit and an article from USA Today.

Your outline for the research paper is due by 10 a.m. Friday. Refer to the guidelines or ask me if you have any questions about that assignment. On Monday we’ll discuss the writing of an academic research paper. Please read Badke, chapter 10 and Appendix 1, pp. 196-203 and write a research journal blog post; see prompt below:

You should receive annotated bibliographies with my comments and a grade by the end of the day Thursday. Those of you writing on cyberbullying and teens’ use of social networking sites and social media might be interested in this report, out today from the Pew Internet Project, an authoritative and reliable research center for current research on how the internet affects our lives.

Here is the prompt for your final research journal blog post:

Last week we read about and worked on:
1.advanced internet searching
2.searching library catalogs
3.searching article databases.
•What have you learned in these classes that’s new to you?
•How do you see yourself using your new skills outside of our course?

Slides from today are available here.

Have a good weekend!

The first thing I would do in writing my draft is to use my outline as a blueprint. We have always been taught to use outlines so we can make our drafts much easier to write. This has helped me a lot because it helps organize my thoughts. I will also use my annotated bibliography as a reference to my sources. It will help me cite the sources based upon what I read in them. Not to mention the paragraphs he wrote about each source will help determine which one to use. With these two types of blueprints in my possession, I would be able to create a draft much easier than if I didn’t have them in the first place.

Research paper Stratagy

My strategy for my first draft research paper is to use my outline as a guide to how I will formulate my paragraphs and main points with proof from the research I conducted. I am a bit nervous about my form of attack on this paper. However, this has worked for me in my past and I have been successful in past research papers. Nevertheless, my research has taken me to a slightly different direction to my original proposal; I have found information that correlates with one another other and I feel comfortable with my research I just have to change my mind frame from what I original wanted. I am not completely off, but my search was narrowed down specifically.

When writing my research paper, I’ll attack it like it is a regular research paper. My strategy includes having main points and backing them up with details. I’ll also attempt for some data synthesis as well as Badke mentioned to try and make it more juicy rather than cut and dry. Unfortunately, a research paper doesn’t allow for much creativity, so it is almost inevitable for our research papers to not get bogged down with details and specific vocabulary. Hopefully, we all, as students, can get something that we can retain to while writing our papers. The different research strategies that exist are certainly new to me and should stick around in my brain for a good amount of time.

Assignment 13 – Research Journal

Writing first draft is going to be fun. The last time, I wrote a research paper was spring 2007. I have not written a research paper since then and that’s why it’s going to be fun. The reading assignments given to us, about the evaluation of information from web, will help me a lot in putting the research paper together. The readings are very informative and definitely I shall use them in my research paper. The strategy is to use focused information and detailed analysis of the data from reliable sources. I have some questions related to the research paper and I shall be in need of some guidance. But, that’s for later; right now, I am just focusing on the outline of the research paper and some internet sources for my research paper. The hardest thing is to find detailed information and internet sources.
