I remember the first time I saw this episode of Abstract: The Art of Design featuring Paula Scher. I was immediately taken aback and enamored with the idea of becoming a designer. This documentary, in and of itself, has served as at least one of the catalysts that has influenced my career trajectory. So, it was a pleasure to have finally gotten a chance to meet her in person.
Recently, she made a guest appearance at City Tech and came to speak to students in COMD. She provided some valuable insights into her personal work and career over at Pentagram. When she finally opened up the floor for questions, I asked her about her ideas regarding Pentagram’s unique structure. On the Abstract episode, she spoke briefly about how Pentagram is different in that it has all the hallmarks of a traditional design firm, yet maintains the freedom of a design cooperative –which i thought was such a fascinating concept. When I asked her about this distinction, she provided thoughtful insight that reinforced my understanding.
Even though I had to leave early and missed out on the group photo lol, this event was a significant and unforgettable moment in my design journey. It reminded me to keep seeking inspiration and to continue learning from industry legends like Paula Scher.
