Ethics in Design 2

2) Learning through these articles and videos on Business Ethics and etiquette has definitely changed my perspective on my own design work. Although i already practiced ethically sourcing stock images and citing sources, these teachings have shown me it is ethical to make sure your team is practicing ethical design when collaborating on work and sourcing information. Making sure everyone is credited with their work and knowing where things are being retrieved from help protect your work and your company/organization/ project as well.

2A) Up until recently I haven’t had to credit another artist on work we’ve collaborated on because I would only put work on my portfolio that only I contributed to. Recently trying to create a more profound portfolio I have to add all information from a project so I have to credit works that I have not created myself. I have credited anybody who contributed to the creation of the campaign. When crediting artists its good to make sure your accurately depicting work the person contributed and making sure you have accurate spelling. I have also gotten credited for work that was contributed by me by other classmates that I have worked on group projects with.

2B) In the “Case Study on Fair Use and Fair Dealing: The Hope Poster Litigation I believe Shepard Fairey did not approach his design of the “Hope poster” in an ethical manner. The first issue at hand was Fairey searching the internet for images without trying to find the photographer to not only ask permission but to give credit for the image used. Fairey made some strong arguments during the law suit about the rules of fair use and it shows how fair use rules can vary and how detailed fair use rules can be when determining if something can or should be used without direct permission. My opinion on the case was Fairey was in the wrong once he realized his mistake and made a decision to hide and destroy evidence that would prove he unfairly used an image and chose not to give credit. As designers taking ethical steps when sourcing material to use is important, not only does it affect your work, it can effect you job, company, employer who all expect you to ethically source your material and get the right permissions to avoid future litigation.
