Ellis Island – Jessica Balatucan

Ellis Island is significant to the culture because the island was a federal immigration station that received thousands of immigrants that hoped to settle in New York City. Although the island was seen by immigrants as a new opportunity to begin a better life, families were separated due to unmet health standards. It started as an “Island of Hope” to an “Island of Tears”. Tourist are attracted to the island because it is a place where they can trace their family history to at least one person who passed through the Port of New York.

Ketsia Surena- Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is important to New York tourism because it’s important to remember history and introduce it to the people who don’t know our history. The actually aircraft carrier USS Intrepid was used in World War II, Cold War and the Vietnam War. NASA then used the vessel to recover ships. The museum also has the Space Shuttle Pavilion, Growler and the British Airways Concorde which is the fastest Concorde to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The Museum is just another powerful reminder that history is important.

Times Square (Janice Guo)

Times square is one of the main attractions offered in New York City. It has been changed throughout the years, dependent on the history of New York City. Most of all, it contributes to the culture of New York City as it proves what the city is well known for. Being one of the fashion capital of the world and “the city that never sleep,” Times Square offers many stores in its area such as Forever 21, Swatch, American Eagle, etc., and many attractions that are opened late into the night. It proves New York City for what it really is and what it offers.

Statue Of Liberty- Matthew Tobjy

The Statue Of Liberty was gifted to the United States from France in 1886 as a symbol of our freedom and democracy. It is not only a National symbol for our culture, but also one for New York City. It represents our freedom and our resilience in hard times and that we can overcome anything. It was a symbol of hope after 9/11 in NYC and for this country.
